Driving through Atlantic Canada

Hi all,

We’re planning a 3 day road-trip in the Maritimes… leaving Halifax on Friday evening, and returning Monday afternoon.

I’m not exactly familiar with the geography or the sights, but what I do know is that we’d like to drive across Cabot Trail in Cape Breton, and also visit Charlottetown in PEI. I know its going to be a lot of driving from mainland Nova Scotia to Cape and then to PEI, but we should be able to do it between Friday evening and Monday afternoon.

If anyone has any advice or suggestions, please share.

Re: Driving through Atlantic Canada

Bro, if you stop by Duplesses or Northern NB. rent a boat or go onto cruise for whale watching. You will only give me duaaien. Its a life time experience I tell you. Whale watching in Halifax or NS is just OK.

Re: Driving through Atlantic Canada

^ yeah... there are a few whale watching spots near Cabot Trail which I was planning onexploring via a cruise.. NB may be a lil too tight to squeeze in - besides I've been to Saint John once before and wanted to cover the other provinces this time around.

Re: Driving through Atlantic Canada

Umar, we went on a road trip to the maritimes last july. Spent about 3 days in Cape Breton Island (Cabot trail to be exact). I love that place. There are loads of walking trails and beautiful beaches. Make sure you go around the entire Cabot trail (loop). There’s this one place called Meat Cove, which is the most northern part of the island. The road isn’t paved after a certain point, and it can get quite steep, so drive carefully. But you don’t wanna miss the view from the top. It’s gorgeous.

Since it’s high season, make sure you book accomodation in advance. The first time we went to Cape Breton, we were able to rent a beautiful cottage by the ocean, since it was off season (mid-May.) But this time around, most places were booked by the time we got around to planning it. I’ll see if I can look up the contact info for you, if you’re planning on renting a cottage.

Apart from spending a few days in the rest of NB and NS, we went to PEI for 2 days. We loved it! Charlottetown was really nice. We spent a night in Cavendish, about an hour (I think) from Charlottetown. There’s a “red” beach you don’t wanna miss. It’s gorgeous.

Anyway, I posted about my trip a while ago in my journal. You can take a look at it.

I also posted a thread with pictures of Cape Breton Island a few years back. Let me see if I can find you a link.

In the second link, picture #2 and #5 are the views from the balcony of the cottage I mentioned.

Let me know if you need more info.

I’ll write a more detailed account of the 5 fabulous days we spent in Halifax, Baddeck and Charlottetown.

For now… here’s this slideshow of pics from the drive through Cabot Trail and to Charlottetown.

Did you not go to Cavendish while you were in PEI? because i don't see photographs from there.
