Sorry for my lack of understanding on this subject, but were these narrations that are attributed to Muhammed things he was told by God or his own rules? And if they were instructions from, God why aren’t they in the Quran?

I think you are a non Muslim. Well Islamic law is derived from four parts. The first one is the Quran. Quran the book of God contains general rulings and instructions about Islam. Allah didn’t reveal it in more detailed form in order to make it preservable. Islam is a religion for the whole mankind till the judgement day. If Allah would have revealed all the things in the Quran he would have revealed 30, lac + chapters instead of 30 chapters of Quran.

2. Hadith, or the sayings and actions of Holy Prophet Muhammad SAW are the second source of Islamic Law. Quran is the instruction of God. Hadith is the way of practicing that instruction and is it’s explanation. There are further types of ahadith. In one kind of ahadith, instructions of the Quran are confirmed or stressed upon. THis means that those rulings are found in quran as well as in haidth as well. The second type of ahadith are about those instructions not mentioned in the Quran.
