Re: Dravid resigns as India captain
Dravid left us in the lurch, say selectors
Whatever maybe his reasons, the national selectors and senior BCCI officials feel completely ‘let down’ by Rahul Dravid’s decision to resign. The selectors had no indication of it despite interacting with Dravid every day during the recent England tour.
“This is simply not on. He has just left us in the lurch before such an important season. The selectors are now left to do all the running around,” commented a top BCCI source.
Various quarters have mentioned how Dravid was ‘feeling suffocated’ and pressured by the selection panel, but the five-member panel has denied the allegation.
“We have always backed the captain. If we wanted Dravid could have been sacked immediately after the World Cup. There was so much claimer for that, but we did not give in,” revealed the source.
With an important six months coming up, the selectors feel Dravid should have given enough notice before making his decision. “It just shows that he wanted to win a series (England) and then move out. It was as if he wanted to prove a point. The Australia tour will be the toughest in recent times, probably he does not want to face failure,” commented another top source.
But could it have been the pressure of captaincy? “If that was the case why did he accept it in 2005? He should not have done it then,” he added.
What probably angered the sources more was that Dravid resigned after expressing his opinion on the selection of the India ‘A’ team. He wanted a former India opener to be tried out before the away series against Australia.

Sachin only has to say yes
All eyes are on Sachin Tendulkar. Will he give his pucca-pucca ‘yes’ to the captaincy offer to both forms of cricket — Test and ODI — or will he pass over ODI leadership in acknowledgement of his over-worked and over-strained body?
If it’s ‘yes’ to both versions of the game, Monday’s intense speculation on whether to have one or two captains will perhaps be over. If Sachin is inclined to take up the job, then the five selectors who meet on Tuesday will almost certainly give it to him.
But if Sachin agrees only to Tests, MS Dhoni is likely to be made ODI captain. This is despite the name of Sourav Ganguly suddenly surfacing as a possibility on Monday, even as all polls showed the ex-captain to be the clear popular choice.
For instance, the *Times Now *poll showed 44% favoured Sourav, 22% Sachin, 18% Dhoni and 16% Yuvraj Singh.
One thing is fairly certain, by the way — Irfan Pathan is likely to make a comeback into the One-day side. His bowling at the T20 World Cup has impressed one and all. Virender Sehwag and Harbhajan Singh too are back in the reckoning.
So who will lead India?
The national selectors will meet on Tuesday to pick the new captain of Team India following Rahul Dravid’s surprise resignation. *TOI *takes a look at the names foremost on selectors’ minds:
**MS Dhoni **
**For: **Young, cool-headed, quick-witted. Gets along with both seniors and juniors. Has proved to be a good leader so far at T20 World Cup. If selectors are planning for the future, Dhoni is the man
**Against: **Lacks experience as captain. Shouldering additional responsibility may affect his batting and keeping too.
**Sachin Tendulkar **
**For: **Seasoned, has led in past. Complete team man who can rally youngsters and seniors. No. 1 on list if selectors opt for experience
**Against: **Doesn’t have good record as captain. If selectors want only one captain for Tests and ODIs, he could be sidelined as he has confessed that the shorter version takes its toll on his body.
**Sourav Ganguly **
**For: **Excellent past record as skipper. Has mellowed with time and shown good form with the bat. Very
aggressive as skipper and can blend any unit into a winning combination
**Against: **Not considered much of a team man. Not too agile on the field. If he loses form, may struggle as captain too. May not be interested in the job at all.
