Yunnus Shaik was condemned to death for blasphemy and has been on death row now for over two years. Isn’t it time he was put out of his misery one way or another? Please write to your nearest Pakistani Govt. consulate.
Hmmm my first assumption before i even clicked this link was that i bet this guy is an ahmadhi, qadiani call them what you like!
Guess what he is, even though they try to be clever and hide this fact behind the word minority and other semantics ;) Ok i was'nt there don't know evidence against etc etc.
But ahmadhis in general think the west are there saviours in every situation if they want to call for secularism in a country which predomenantly calls for islam there bound to be conflict.
If he innocent let him go But if he called muhammad(saw) a name or insulted him then you do the crime you pay the time or in this case with his life!

...he was accused of having made derogatory remarks during one of his lectures on 7th century Arabia and its practices and a group of students who apparently found what he had to say offensive, though historically correct...

What did he say? And if it was historically correct, how can he be put to death for saying it? Do blasphemy laws and or religion require one to lie or just pretend things did not happen?

Seminole, that is the wierdest thing of all. He was teaching part time in the evening at some college. One of the students asked him whether the parents of the Prophet followed the islamic custom of shaving body hair or not. Apparently his reply was that since Gabriel had not as yet brought the "message", the parents probably followed the pre-islamic custom as far as body hair is concerned. That was considered blasphemy. I have asked why that was blasphemy and have gotten many answers, none of which make any sense. If any one knows more on this please join in.
Dr. Younus Shaikh is founder-President of 'Enlightenment', a Pakistan based organization that is a member of the International Humanist and Ethical Union (www.iheu.org). Dr. Shaikh is a doctor and a teacher at a medical college in Islamabad. He lived and worked in the UK before returning to Pakistan.
I got the following off the net on a page written in december 2000. A search will yeild a lot more hits.
On 4 October 2000, Dr Shaikh was arrested by the Islamabad police and booked under Section 295-C (Blasphemy) of the Pakistan Penal Code. The police First Information Report was not readily available, but in it he is alleged to have defiled Mohammad, the Prophet of Islam, by pointing out that the Prophet did not become a Muslim till the age of 40 (i.e. until he received the first message of God), and that the Prophet's parents were non-Muslims because they died before Islamic revelation. It is for stating these facts that Dr. Shaikh will be killed by the State, if he is found guilty: we should not forget that he did not abuse, he did not threaten, he did not scorn or sneer. 45 year-old Dr Shaikh lives alone, has no family, and has been sacked from his job following his arrest. To build popular pressure, an Islamabad-based Urdu language newspaper, Khabrain, is carrying a campaign demanding the death penalty for him. In Pakistan, Blasphemy is a non-bailable offence and attracts the mandatory death-penalty. If we do not act in time, he will be executed.
