Introduction:
The last few hundred years have seen an increasing number of skirmishes between science and religion, from the debate over an Earth-centered universe to the current conflict over origin of species, in particular, humans. The name of Galileo has come to symbolize the conflict between science and religion and the ultimate triumph of science in the face of an oppressive clergy. On the other side, many critics of evolution use Darwin?s beliefs to link modern biology with atheism and discredit evolutionary theory. The reality, however, is more complex and requires a nuanced approach. I will revisit the Galileo case and address some modern day interactions between science and religion. Can we apply some of these lessons to Pakistan? While not conclusive at all, I will suggest some possible ways to navigate through in this complex and often controversial arena.
