it must be really hard for poor ppl then to marry off their daughters..
howz this trend changed over the years?.. is it more elaborated now?. or has it decreased?
or is it same as it was before?

First off dowry or Mahr is not a culture thing, its an Islamic thing, and it is given to the bride by her future husband.
And what did you mean when you said its hard for poor people to marry off their daughters? That's kinda strange, because with Arabs, poor people have a hard time marry off their "Sons."

interesting..
what i mean is because the dowry is soo expensive and ppl expect ( in pakistan atleast) to have almost everything in the dowry. from jewelry to tv to cars sometimes. a poor man cant afford all these things and hence have lots of problem to marry their daughters. some ppl r so shameless that they even ask for certain things that the girl shud have in her dowry or the wedding is called off :(
y is it so hard to marry off their sons in arabs?

Because of the Mahr for the future daughter in laws. Majestic your confusing Dowry with Mahr, Dowry is given by the parents of the daughter when she get's married. While Mahr is given by the Husband. Dowry or "Jaheez" is a hindu non islamic concept that is both abhorrent and goes against our Deen. I ask everyone to stay away from this, because it degrades the staus of women in our culture. I really feel irritated by the dowry concept because in our culture, females are seen as a burden from birth because parents have to provide for their jaheez when they get married, so they automatically begin to value their sons even more.

Well, since in some pakistani familys the parents of the female can't marry off their daughters at times, its the same with some arabs, they just can not afford to marry their son. Its kinda sad really, in both cultures

Sorry if this is off topic, but I have a few Arab friends who have married non-Arab women and they tell me that it is very difficult to get married to arab women nt only because of the issues we are talking about but the demands that the ladies place upon them, is this true? My apologies if it is offensive, but my frienfds are all well to do with family in the Gulf countries, and when they say that the demands are too high, I wonder..

Yes its true and you hear this all the time from Mullahs, they say its wrong and just right down crazy. But this does happen mostly in the Gulf countries, Saudi and at times with some Yemeni families.

I'm glad I come from a family which has not practiced dowry for several generations.... we just do Mahr, as required in Islam.
