Dowry system have some good things but people totally misused it tell me one thing are you ready to give your daughter share in your property after marriage, no body does that, every one want to keep for their sons so they introduce it in olden days so that the girl also gets some share
i belong to a caste where a middle class person give about 40-50 lakhs INR in dowry
as far as i know indian law makes it cumpulsary for equal shre in property for girls unless a will is made byy the parents.BTW its the prestige issue in AP(mostly in reddys in rayalseema and the chowdhary's of west godavari district) to lavishly shower dowry.
