Downloadable content - the good and the bad

What’s your opinion of downloadable content? Do you find that gaming has been enhanced or suffered on the whole due to the paradigm?

As for my opinion, it was something that had potential. The first instance I can think of was for Jet Set/Grind Radio by Sega for the Dreamcast. They would let you download image files as your tag. I also felt that they made good use of it throughout that generation (Dreamcast, PS2, XBox, Gamecube). However, it become annoying when they started to use microtransactions, which wouldn’t be as annoying if the games were free to play.

It has become really annoying this generation, particularly with the XBox One, where I’ve had to update every game that I’ve tried to install on the console. Though this may not be considered DLC in its conventional sense but the whole trend of online connections and mass storage for consoles enabled this. So overall my impression is that the games are shipping incomplete with the intent to get the consumer to pay more for the DLC afterwards.
