We bring our children up based on certain principles and standards, hoping they will stick to the principles throughout their lives. Modesty is one of the basic things that muslim parents hope their kids will practise (and I don’t mean a hijab).
When our kids watch non-muslims do something immodest, its explainable because they’re not of the same faith as ourselves and so they’re not expected to follow the same principles.
When they see muslims do something immodest, it can also be explained that what they’re doing is wrong but they are not necessarily practising muslims and so they are also not expected to follow the same principles.
But its when the parents (or other muslims) justify immodest behaviour among muslims that the kids get confused. Pretty darn confused!
Why, as Pakistanis, are we expected to support and encourage Pakistani “talent” such as vulgar models/actors while, at the same time, we preach modesty to our own kids?
Values and standards chaneg once we have kids. Before that we are not responsible for anyone's ethics but our own. I tell you, now that our kids are growing up, there are so many TV shows that wife and I used to watch but dont anymore. Not that we are foreind ourselves, we stopped liking such shows all together.
am I still on the topic that you are trying to discuss?
I do not have any double standards , neither do my friends or people I hang around with.
Stop hanging around those people BBQ, make friends with nice people with high morals and then you will not have to rand about double standards.
TLK bhai, yes ur on the right track. I'll give you an example from the thread about Miss Pakistan... most people had said it was distasteful of pakistani girls (practising muslims or not) to expose so much... others didn't care... but there were some who implied that Pakistanis are close-minded when it comes to encouraging their own "talent"... I doubt that an average Pakistani would ever allow his own kids to flaunt it all... so why should he agree with something that he wouldn't allow his kids to do, just for the sake of supporting Pakistani media? Am I making sense? =p

I don't understand how it is close minded not to encourage 'talent' that is un-Islamic...............I by no means will stop anybody from doing anything........but I would never encourage my kids to do something that is against *their *own faith.............but I do get how it would be a double standard if I encouraged Miss Pakistan's talent yet forbid my kids from doing something like that
