Donuts

Today I tried making donuts following this recipe:

Ingredients

2 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 cup white sugar
1 teaspoon salt
1 tablespoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 dash ground nutmeg
2 tablespoons melted butter
1/2 cup milk
1 egg, beaten
1 quart oil for frying
Directions

  • Heat oil in deep-fryer to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C).
  • In a large bowl, sift together flour, sugar, salt, baking powder, cinnamon and nutmeg. Mix in butter until crumbly. Stir in milk and egg until smooth. Knead lightly, then turn out onto a lightly floured surface. Roll or pat to 1/4 inch thickness. Cut with a doughnut cutter, or use two round biscuit cutters of different sizes.
  • Carefully drop doughnuts into hot oil, a few at a time. Do not overcrowd pan or oil may overflow. Fry, turning once, for 3 minutes or until golden. Drain on paper towels.

My donuts came out horrible. They tasted burnt even though they were fried just the right color. What did I do wrong? Did I use a wrong recipe or did I do something else? =(

Re: Donuts

We made doughnuts this weekend too, but my sister put yeast in hers and let the dough set for a bit.

I don't remember the recipe, as I wasnt paying attention.

I shall try and find out for you.

Re: Donuts

That'd be great Millyyy! Thanks!

Re: Donuts

Nutmeg and cinnamon must have done that. They bring out rather strong flavor though donuts should taste plain. I use the recipe below, you would see it has basic balking ingredients and yeast. And the donuts turn out very good

Yeast Doughnuts - All Recipes

The only times I have tried out donuts is if I have left over pizza dough, I was watching some show with Giada on Food Network and she said leftover pizza dough makes great donuts so I tried it......they came out pretty good

Re: Donuts

yumm donuts! Ive made donuts a few times and they always came out delicious! My recipe never had any cinnamon or nutmeg in it. just plain donut coated with sugar. :yummy:

Re: Donuts

Jalpari, thanks for the recipe! Insha’Allah will try that one out. Initially I thought it was because I didn’t let the donuts rise before frying them, but you do have a point there about the nutmeg and cinnamon.

Guac, do they taste the same and how do you make them? Never heard of that though, sounds interesting!

HNK, :bummer: Lucky youuu! I wish mine came out yummy too, but better luck next time.

Re: Donuts

no they don't come out exactly like the ones in the bakeries but they are good, its something I do to get rid of leftover pizza dough I just cut circles and pop them in the fryer, in a separate bag I add cinnamon and sugar and when the donuts are still hot I had them into the bag and shake.....If I have chocolate chips I'll make a glaze to put on the donuts

Re: Donuts

Jalpari thank you so much! I followed your recipe yesterday and they came out great!

Guac, thank you for explaining! That's worth a try. :)

Re: Donuts
