Nice video but useless in my opinon. The thing is that you dont do this to your Honda or Hyundai or any car. Cars are not design to be ultimate castles. Cars are designed to withstand any normal use over their lifetime. Normal use does not include standing on top of an open door and jumping on it or slamming the door with as much power as you have. Its like sledge hammering your hood and when nothing happens, you say - do that to your corolla? Why?

Then we might as well give up crash tests, acceleration and brake tests and such like. Because well how many times would a normal person crash right?

wrong. Crash test saves people’s life. I worked in Automotive industry for 12 years as a design and structural analysis engineer and let me tell you that an over-designed car is considered poor engineering. Anyone can double up the thickness of hinges in the car doors and create a door that is as strong as bank vault, but that increases the weight of the car without adding the performance and durability, not to mention add on to the material and processing cost, making the car more expensive. That, in automotive engineering, is called bad engineering. Optimized design is what everyone is after, we dont need steel tanks anymore.

I’m starting to see many VW features trickle down to Japanese, Amercan & Korean brands. This includes struts in the trunk, the double-pull handles to unlock and open the rear doors, the automatic open/close sun-roof knobs,etc.

All these features are only over-engineered until some other engineer figures out how useful they are.

But yes, I agree, no one jumps on their doors to test how strong the hinges are.

when I said over-engineering, I was specifically speaking from structural strength point of view (because that is my background). Features like struts and double pull handle add on to the convenience and satisfactory customer experience, which is good marketing.

But that’s my point. This isn’t a steel tank yet its a solid vehicle. The video is another way of showing how far the automotive industry has come. I’m an Aero-Ninjaneer so design considerations are incredibly sophisticated and cutting-edge in the industry. I’m not in favour of over-engineering but that’s not what this video was all about.

I was actually in door group and two of the requirements that we had and applicable to the above video are ‘door closing effort’ and ‘door sag’. Each requirement used the load data that the manufacturer gathered from the real life users. Doors are designed to withstand the repetitive service loads of so many cycles of door usage. If I remember correctly, doors are designed to be functional for 15000 cycles (15000 open/shuts). Some of those cycles were abusive loads and some were average operational loads. Automotive are designed to meet those requirements and that is it. Anything more would be considered over-engineering.

That is why I was so much ticked at that weirdo Jesse James who in one interview challenged the Ford engineers (after he pimped up a mustang) to design the car like he can. He was such an idiot not to realize that consumer autos are not about raw power. They are a good combination of power, safety, durability, economy and ergonomics. No wonder Sandra Bullock kicked him out of her life.
