The US military has had to spend about $200m (£106m) on replacing service members lost under its policy on homosexuals, a report has found.

The service lost almost 10,000 gays and lesbians under its “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy, said the study by the Government Accountability Office (GAO).

A number of those had skills - such as languages in Arabic, Farsi and Korean - vital to the US war on terror.

The policy was introduced in 1993 by then US President Bill Clinton.

It was a compromise following controversy when Mr Clinton tried to lift the long-standing ban on homosexuals serving in the military.

The GAO study found that, since that time, the US military had lost 9,488 service men and women because of the policy.

Of those, 757 were in critical occupations such as interpreters and intelligence analysts.

Some 322 had proficiency in strategically important languages that the Pentagon has said are in short supply, the GAO concluded.

‘Bin policy’ call

The GAO said it was not possible to estimate the full costs of the Pentagon’s policy on homosexuals.

But it said it cost around $190 million to recruit and train replacement personnel.

Democrats representative Martin Meehan said he would introduce a bill next week to repeal the policy, Reuters news agency reported.

“It is more apparent than ever before that, as we conduct a global war on terror and face tremendous personnel shortages, that the ‘don’t ask, don’t tell’ law is undermining our military readiness,” he was quoted as saying.

Responding to the GAO report, the Pentagon said that of all the military personnel discharged for various reasons between 1994-2003, just 0.37% was because of homosexual conduct. Under the “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy, the US military does not ask about, and service members do not reveal their, sexual orientation.

US mulls ban on women in combat

Republicans in the US Congress are trying to pass legislation which would keep female soldiers out of combat.

The measure is being considered now by the House Armed Services Committee.

Advocates of the proposal want to stop women from working as drivers, medics and logistics specialists in teams which provide back-up to combat units.

They say the women get too close to the fighting. But the US army is opposed to the plan at a time when they are having problems with recruitment.

Senior officers have said if it passes into law, they will have to pull out 22,000 female soldiers from their current jobs and replace them with men.

No front line

Women who serve in the US army are barred by law from fighting on the front line.
But in Iraq, the US is fighting an insurgency - which means there is no front line.

About 9,000 women are serving in Iraq and 35 have been killed.

Combat can happen anywhere at any time, and women have frequently been caught up in it.

Republican lawmakers in the Congress now want to pass a measure which would keep women out of units called Forward Support Companies.

The army is deeply opposed to the measure.

Underlying the army’s opposition are the problems it is having recruiting new troops. For the last three months, the army has failed to meet its recruiting targets. At the moment it looks set to miss its annual target by 15%. Further limiting the roles women can fill in the military will make its task even harder.

Re: dont ask, dont tell policy, discrimination in US army.

Keeping female soldiers out of combat doesn’t mean they are banning women from army.

Re: dont ask, dont tell policy, discrimination in US army.

A. You're right suroor there should probably be no policy.
Currently if caught having gay sex in the army you will be thrown out, not killed.

B. Only a few Republican lawmakers oppose women in the military so nothing in reguards to that is going to change.

Re: dont ask, dont tell policy, discrimination in US army.

I must respectfully disagree. The ** last ** place in the world one would expect to discriminate against homosexuality is Kandahar. That place makes Neverland look like Boys Town.

Re: dont ask, dont tell policy, discrimination in US army.

I agree with Suroor, US shouldn’t have such laws that discriminate against gays in the military. Almost all of European militaries have gays in their armed forces. US Armed forces as an institution has set a lot of examples for the American civic and just society (e.g., desegregation, etc.) but this Gay issue is really quite pathetic. There are openly gay Reps on the Armed Services committee, and more in the Pentagon. I wonder why is such a stupid policy. I am hopeful that Armed forces will open itself up for Gays to join – without fear of anything.

Removing women from combat duties.... will it violate equal opportunity protections?
