Mullas are not justifying it. They are just quoting the massaail, that also only Shia scholar. Donkey is haram according to sunnis.

strictly religiously speaking, i think it's Halaal in Islam...some term it as makrooH [undesirable]...the problem is in the marketing...if they misrepresent and try to sell it as beef then it's a matter of cheating. police must look into the matter.

Sayyiduna Abd Allah ibn Umar (Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him & give him peace) forbade the meat of donkeys on the day of the battle of Khaybar. (Sahih al-Bukhari, no: 5202)

Sayyiduna Anas ibn Malik (Allah be pleased with him) narrates that a person came to the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him & give him peace) and said: The donkeys have been (slaughtered and) eaten. Another man came and said: The donkeys have been destroyed. The Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him & give him peace) ordered a caller to announce to the people: Allah and His Messenger forbid you to eat the meat of donkeys, for it is impure. Thus the pots were turned upside down while the (donkeys) meat was boiling in them. (Sahih al-Bukhari, no: 5208)

Hey smart guy, if you do something which is makrooh on a regular basis, it becomes haram. So even if donkey meat was makrooh ( Which it is not) It will become haram eventually.

Is a donkey really that different than a goat, cow, buffalo, pig, chicken etc etc?

I'm talking about besides the religious point of view and what was attested to be halal or not back in the day.

It's meat. They are all similar animals.

There is a hadith that Prophet (SAW) said and the gist of which is that: A time will come that a person will be reclining against his pillow and will say that we believe in Quran and what we find in it. When you see such a person, ask him to show you from Quran that donkey is halal. Know that there are things that Allah has made haram in His book and there are things that I have told you about which are haraam
