Donating cord blood..

ok I remember I opened a thread while ago regarding banking cord blood and people had mixed reviews about it.. we did our research and are leaning more towards donating the cord blood inshaAllah.

I was just wondering if anyone donated the cord blood in the US and how did the process go?

The hospital that I am delivering at doesnt collect cord blood so we have to supply our own kit.. I need to find out more about it but I was just wondering if anyone donated cord blood and how did you go around it?

Any personal experiences?

Re: Donating cord blood..

for us, the hospital had a system in place for this. all we had to do was tell the doc that we'd like to donate the cord blood, and they did some clamping and syringe thingie as soon as i got to do snip-snip on the cord.

Re: Donating cord blood..

see like I said before our hospital is not one of the centers for the cord blood collection so we have to bring our own kit that will be sent by one of the centers and then the hospital will collect it and send it to the center.. I need to figure out how that works!!!

Re: Donating cord blood..

i wanted to donate it too but the hospital in our state did not provide the facilties.Unfortunately it was never saved or donated. After i had my baby i think there was some legal activity in our state regarding cord blood donation...but then it was a bit too late....:(

Re: Donating cord blood..

I donated the cord blood of both my kids here in the U.S. Both times different hospitals and different doctors in different states. The first time I choose Cyrobanks, a facility in Florida that sends you a kit before hand and a form to fill out. I spoke to the doctor, and she was very willing to do it. All that was required was to give a call to Cryobanks when you go into labor (you have to register beforehand and not to close to the due date so they will havetime to send you teh kit.Its all free of charge). You take the kit they have sent you to the hospital and give it to the doctor (good idea would be to remind the nurses too). They do the rest and Cyrobanks send a Fed Experson over to collect it. The second time, I registered too late so the kit arrived after baby had come, but lucikly the hospital I deleived at had arrangements of their own, so we were able to donate it there. The second doctor was also very welcoming.

Re: Donating cord blood..

We had the facility at our hospital...I just had to sign a form and it was taken care of.

Re: Donating cord blood..

Its weird because where I delivered they had a facility that would take care of it but I remember they said something about charging for it. My baby came early so we never got a chance to go through the process.

Re: Donating cord blood..

Spiral...there is no charge if you are donating it but if you want to bank it for yourself there is a one time fee around 2k and then an annual fee of $100-200. We thought about banking since it is financially doable until I found out that sometimes the blood just dent have enough cells that are needed so you can store it for 10 years and may not know if its even beneficial or not..however if you donate it and it is not beneficial they will just discard it.

Nikki..that's awesome!!!

Re: Donating cord blood..

Gtg....I don't remember the exact amount, but when I looked into the info regarding donating it,we were the ones who were supposed to pay for it...it was a one time thing though and nothing monthly...

Re: Donating cord blood..

chipsy.. it does say that we dont have to pay for donating cord blood but I havent spoken to anyone yet so lets see what do they say.. I have left a message for someone to call me back.. I will keep you guys posted!!

Q: Does it cost me anything to donate cord blood?
A: There is no cost to you when you donate cord blood to a public cord blood bank. Public cord blood banks cover the costs of collecting, processing and storing cord blood units.

Re: Donating cord blood..

I just dont remember the exact details...but now that you mention a public cord blood bank,I think that was the issue. There was none hence I would have been responsible to pay.And as I said earlier, just a few months after we had the baby there was some legislative action in this state regarding cord blood donation.

Re: Donating cord blood..

oh... interesting! I have no idea whats going to happen.. I spoke to the midwife about it and she said it's pretty common and people do it all the time so as long as I have informed them beforehand, they will take care of it.. it's all about timing! So I am assuming, it will be an easy process.. inshaAllah!

Re: Donating cord blood..

Gemini, Were you able to contact the CryoBanks people?

Re: Donating cord blood..

eastern... we spoke to the midwife who told us the procedure of donating cord blood and my husband changed his mind.. at the practice, they dont cut the cord until it has stop pulsating hence giving the last few bits of nutrients and oxygen to the baby; however, in terms of donating cord blood they dont give you that extra 3-4 mins and cut the cord right away to collect blood. Eeven though it's not risky at all and doesnt do much to the baby but we became selfish!
