Illinois donated vaccine never reached earthquake victims

CHICAGO (AP) A published report says $2.6 million in flu vaccine the state of Illinois donated to Pakistan never made it to
the earthquake victims it was intended to help.
The Chicago Tribune reports in its Sunday editions that health officials in Pakistan crushed and burned the half-million doses of vaccine because it had expired.
Governor Blagojevich’s administration bought the vaccine from overseas in 2004. But the federal government refused to let it into the country.
That fall, there was a severe U.S. shortage of vaccine, and Democrats were making an election-year issue out of a federal ban on importing prescription drugs to escape higher prices in the U.S. The Blagojevich administration says it did not track the vaccine once it reached Pakistan.
