PCB keen to avoid lop-sided Pentangular Cup contests: New selection method may be adopted

Sources said the main problem was the Balochistan and NWFP outfits which do not have many competitive cricketers to face stronger teams from Punjab and Sindh. It was because of these two teams that the competitive level of the tournament in the last two editions had left much to be desired.

The meeting at Islamabad will discuss new and different ideas to make the tournament more competitive this season. A PCB official said that the new pattern of the Pentangular Cup could be changed along with the teams’ titles, which would carry the names of the former greats of the country like Fazal Mahmood, Imtiaz Ahmad and Imran Khan.

The captain of each team could be a top senior cricketer of Pakistan from amongst the likes of Shoaib Malik, Misbah-ul-Haq, Mohammad Yousaf, Younis Khan and Shoaib Akhtar.

The official also said that the selectors would have to pick the best 75 players in the country to form the five teams for the event to make it more competitive. “It will definitely provide good competition in all matches, making the tournament a very tough one,” he said.

Well the idea is nice … but the thing is … will they expect any thing from crowd ? … i mean … who will we support ?
the captains … or the player chosen as the name of the team ?

Look at last year’s Pentangular Cup teams.

NWFP was represented by:

Yasir Hameed
Rafatullah Mohmand
Riaz Kail
*Younis Khan
Wajahatullah Wasti
Adnan Raees
+Zulfiqar Jan
Mohammad Aslam
Samiullah Khan
Shakeel-ur-Rehman
Fazl-e-Akbar
Khurram Shehzad

Baluchistan team had:

Shoaib Khan
Usman Tariq
Saeed Anwar
Bilal Khilji
Saeed Bin Nasir
*Nasim Khan
Kamran Hussain
+Gulraiz Sadaf
Abdur Rauf
Imranullah Aslam
Azharullah

Hardly anyone recognizable.

Punjab had the likes of Hafeez, Malik, Nasir Jamshed, Yousuf, Misbah and Wahab Riaz. Sindh had Khurram Manzoor, Afridi, Anwar Ali, Kaneria and Sohail Khan. Sindh had the maximum attraction of superstars, and even though NWFP ended up higher on the points than Punjab, Sindh/Punjab were two provinces that were filled with star-level cricketers.

Re: Domestic Cricket

So is there any way .... Our domestic cricket can become Competitive?

Some parts of domestic cricket being more competitive? If yes, then yes, star-power is always high in Sindh and Punjab side which makes it competitive when these two meet, add on the fact the rivalry between the two provinces which is another variable. There is definitely a youth-filled domestic cricket and we saw earlier this year that a number of youngsters were given chances in the national team. They are either dropped too soon or never picked in the first place to warrant anything, success or failure.

On the topic, I think it will be a challenge to find a cricket team comprised fully of Balochis. Even though the team is aptly named Balochistan, more than half of the cricketers are from Multan and the likes.

Re: Domestic Cricket

^^ infact more then half of the team was frm Multan ...
Neways ..
abt rivalry ............ i dont think there is any rivalry b/w Sindh n Punjab .. rather its b/w Karachi n Lahore ....... n somehow ....... PCB is not cashing it ........
