Domain Knowledge

How important is it??

I am into retail.

Our org. entered into Banking just recently, and I had the option to move. When i put forth this idea to my manager, he was like…“you need a lot of time to learn it. Its not like you know everything about Retail.”…Then, he told me…if you really wanted, I could move..

But me being me, got emotionally blackmailed and decided to stay till this goes live…:hinna:

On speaking with a collegue who did move…He was like, uff:hinna:, its difficult and confusing.

So, now am scared…:(…career main itni lambi kahani :smack2:

Your views please

Re: Domain Knowledge

I presume you are in IT..., my response is actually from an IT perspective

Your decision to switch depends on which direction you want to move in your career & your motivations.

If you want to build your competence as a technical practitioner specializing in any specific technical practice like software development, software project management. QA etc. then domain switching might be useful , because with every domain along with the new jargon, come some unique technical challenges & a new way of thinking & looking at the problem , & the excitement of newer kind of problems can help you manage the learning curve associated with a new domain & you will build technical expertise faster then you would if you stick to a single domain , however doing that to often can be counter-productive as you might be spending a lot more time understanding the domain rather then working on solutions.
But if you want to pursue a career as an industry consultant, IT Management or even as Solution experts like CRM,ERP , Datawarehousing etc. then switch domains only after careful consideration on whether it matches with your interests & skills.
