DOLPHINS HELP CLEAR MINES
Allied forces in the Gulf are kitted out with a secret weapon in the battle to clear mines from the sea - dolphins.
The animals have been trained to hunt mines by the United States Navy.
It also has sea lions to guard ships.
The dolphins are on hand to ensure ships can dock safely at the southern port of Umm Qasr - a vital gateway for the humanitarian aid effort to Iraq.
They are part of a mine clearance group that includes US, British and Australian divers preparing the port so that ships can dock, a British Navy spokesman said.
They are officially known as Mark 7 and 8 Mammal Marine Systems. The sea lions are Mark 5.
An inbuilt sonar allows the dolphins to detect mines on the sea bed while their agility means they can avoid floating explosives, US Navy spokesman said.
The dolphins are trained not swim up to the mines but to place markers nearby and are removed from the area before the mines are detonated.
“They are deployed with an army vet and civilian trainers,” the spokesman added.
“They make sure the dolphins are properly fed and adjusting well to the environment they are in and generally in a healthy state.”
The sea lions from the US Naval Space and Warfare Systems Centre have been guarding coalition ships from attack by enemy divers in Bahrain since January.
