well coming up with new words is rather ridiculous, i recall hearign terms like phakphak adda for trainstation and similarly stupid names for telephone, mailbox etc, but for words that exist I dont understand why theya re abandoned, i can understand that some of them are old fashioned or tough, but I dont understand why bhai is bhai and behen is sister.

Anyway coming back to your's and Jal-pari's remarks
My father always use to say Rakaabee. This wrod reminds me of him. Also, he use to call quilt, "Razaaee" while my mother calls it "Lehaaf". Althoug I am always confused whether Lehaaf is mu'annas ya muzak'kar (lehaaf rakhkha hai, ya lehaaf rakhkhee hai)
Also, we use to have small pantry type cabinet and we called it Naimat khana (what a beautiful word), hanging fruit/vegetable basket was Cheeka, commode was khuddee, fork was kanta, salad was kachoomar, Omelate was khaageena. I even heard people calling Bulb, qumquma.
Really miss those days and that language

Razai is actually different than Lehaaf

yaar Razai actually does not have the cotton which can be taken out every summer .. but often since the word is used for Lehaaf, it has become Ghalat-ul-Aa'm ... Razai is more closer to "Khes"... actually it is "quilt" :D

Ok, according to farsi and arabic dictionary, quilt means Lehaaf. Could it be that Razaee is more of an Hindi word while lehaaf is farsi/arabic word for quilt

pata naheeN yaar... but Razai normally is not opened and cotton taken out and then new cotton filled and then, stiched... once, it is made, it is there forever .... Lehaaf is a different ball game and that is how I have always differentiate the two and that is how I have learnt it.
