Dogs as Pets?

What is the take on keeping a dog as a pet? I understand that dogs should not be kept inside the house. Supposing a dog is kept in the garden instead of within the home and the household members are particular about Wudu and Ghusl after interaction with the pet, is that fine?
I know of the hadith which speaks of angels not entering a home with a dog, but does that refer to dwelling inclusive of garden area, or dwelling exclusive of it?

IMHO, isn’t keeping a dog in a garden the same as keeping it beyond the home somewhere, as long as you don’t let it into the house?

It is ok to keep a dog according to Maliki school!

the dog's sliva is considered najis in Hanafii maslak...and, it is also believed that angels do NOT enter a house where there is a dog.

Guard Dogs/Watch Dogs are OK to have. If in order to guard inside of a house, they need to be inside then so be it. In such case, just make sure that you have a separate prayer room and you dont allow the dog in it.

I am not giving you a fatwa, but just sharing common sense with you based on ..

  1. Guard Dogs are allowed, even in Hanafi fiqh.

  2. The Hadees that talks about angels not entering house when dogs are in, also talks about pictures should not be there, but today all the scholars agree that there is a different ruling for "zahir" and "Batin", and that is why having a rolled newspaper with pictures (even inside a masjid) is ok. Same with ID cards. So if the dog is not in the same room but in another room or just inside the main door of the house, as long as its so he can guard the house, it should be ok.

basically there has to be a legit reason apart from “i think dogz are cute i want one as a pet” even if u wanna keep the dog outside of the house… HUH! who’d have thunk it :confused:

one other rule of thumb i always follow is if there is doubt about anything being acceptable or not or acceptable under certain conditions but not under others…avoid it…just to be on the safe side

There is no confusion about dogs llxxll and your judgment about "a legit reason" is exactly what the ruling is.

BTW, hunting dogs are also allowed.

Worker dogs ... i.e. guide dogs and sheep dogs

Other types above too .... (guard, hunting) - with exception of guide dogs best to keep them in a kennel away from your place of living such as other end of property.
