Re: does your toddler
No, my husband and I control all the gadgets so he is never glued to them. alhamdulilah.
Re: does your toddler
Yes i saw she was getting addicted but we have stopped n controlled now just 2 hrs in whole day for tv n nursary rhymes
Re: does your toddler
2 hrs ???
Just ???
Re: does your toddler
These addictions are usually a phase, she’ll get bored in a couple of days and move on to find other entertaining activities.
It may be a phase but its been going on for a few months now. Can only get her to play with her toys for like barely an hour
Might be cuz she has no other children to play with. Really don’t know how to limit or cut back on the amount of YouTube time
Re: does your toddler
It only happens bc you give her the option. Take her for outings more frequently, join playgroups, etc.
Also, if she will watch programs, use a specific children’s channel rather than youtube, in order to avoid advertisements and other videos that are not appropriate for her.
Re: does your toddler
^ agreed this is wht I am doing daily outing for 2 to 3 hours n rest of the day playdough , puzzles, colouring , book reading these sort of activities I keep her busy wth these, I have downloaded nursery rhymes n play tht instead of youtube, you can also get CDs
She is 2. U limit the.time by just not giving in to her demands???
Distract… Get her excited.bout something else… If all else fails. Be strict. Cry or whatever but you aren’t getting the.iPad etc. Slowly she will learn.
Gotta be the parent .
how old is your lo? Impressive that you guys manage control over the gadgets. If my dd sees me on my cell or laptop then there’s no way I can continue doing what I was doing as she instantly demands access. E.g. I’m typing this reply from the washroom just so she doesn’t see me using me cell and starts asking for it
thanks for these suggestions. There are a couple of free learning centers around the city for kids but the problem is I don’t have a car during the day.
And as for being out and about in general, once again I don’t have a car. Plus I have a 1 Month old baby and its doubly hard to be out with 2 kids in this cold weather.
And so we’re pretty much limited to staying in the house and doing indoor activities. Shea still too young for most arts and crafts. I tried introducing her to water paints and crayons but not much success. The only thing she keeps going back to are videos and cartoons ![]()
Re: does your toddler
2 years is very young age you can easily distract her right now and if you will not she will become more rigid she should know who is the parent and who has authority. if you cant take her out make her busy at home wth other stuff, you can involve her wth you in house chores like I do dusting give my daughter small cloth piece.
Re: does your toddler
You will almost definitely need to change your own habits and screen time. It’s hard for us to let go of the habit of phones/laptops/tvs, but it’s probably better for it to be reduced anyway. How and when you use these devices will probably need to change.
She can’t type youtube.com right? You put it on for her. Just don’t. You can even make an elaborate show of the device being broken or thrown away. Do it in a way that is not punitive or scolding.
I don’t believe you have to completely cut out tv time, but if you’re noticing a problem, it’s time to reduce time. Especially if you think she’s not taking interest in other things.
Re: does your toddler
keeping a toddler occupied for the whole day in a healthy way is no joke though. it is pretty much a full time job. :\
Re: does your toddler
I can totally sympathize with being stuck at home with a kid and not knowing how to keep her busy. It’s not easy.
Actually many 2yo are really interested in arts and crafts. If crayons don’t work, try finger paints or play doh, stuff she can handle more easily. Provide a space where she can get messy without causing too many problems. Get safety scissors and let her practice cutting scraps of paper. Let her glue different colors and shapes on paper.
Read colorful books with textures, shapes, cut outs, pop ups, buttons that make sounds, etc.
If arts/crafts aren’t her thing, try more active passtimes. Grab a ball and toss it around. Have jumping contests. Race. Play hide and seek.
Have you tried cooking/baking together? Let her help mix/mash things.
If she likes devices, get her a kiddie camera or let her use a phone as a camera to walk around taking photos of the house and her new baby sibling, etc. Print out some of these and put them up. Also if you’re using devices, have her play a children’s game on it, rather than watching videos.
oh and do some age appropriate puzzles with her.
Re: does your toddler
very true. especially with a newborn around. do what you can, but give yourself a break too.
Re: does your toddler
where do you live? how old is your lil one?
I let my 2 year old son watch tv or you tube only when i am cooking and i need him to sit at one place. More often though, I keep him in the kitchen busy with blocks asking him to make me different things or color in front of me.
You will also need to change your habits.. my son always asks for laptop if he sees me on it, always, so I keep it under the couch and take it out only when he is sleeping or if I want him to see something on it. He honestly hasn’t disocvered this trick yet and thinks laptop is nanany (sleeping) when its under the couch. ![]()
If youa re in teh US, take him to library for story times, check out groupon and living social for lots of playareas, bouncy house, children’s musuems deals.. I found a bucnh of indoor stuff for winter. We got out everyday except Friday.. we stay home, listen to Quran lectures (anotehr thing he has picked up that when Quran is on you tube, he cant touch it), do our weekly cleaning of the house etc etc. I use lots of index cards and we play hop scotch so even if I am in the kitchen or bathroom, I tell him to hop onto letter B or Number 3 or particular shape and he does.. not to mention, it tires him out for good nap too ![]()
if you want more ideas for activities, routines etc.. let me know..I have collected some ideas online!
ps! we cant preach if we cant practice.. I need to be with him all the time for many activities so by the time his dad gets home,I am too tired to even set up the table for dinner!
Re: does your toddler
consider having a play date once or twice a week where someone comes over with their toddler…perhaps she will find that interesting…
Re: does your toddler
my 13 month old is allowed to watch nursery rhymes on tv when I’m cooking. and i allow it because i don’t want him near the stove when I’m using it. he is absolutely not allowed to touch the laptops, but i do give my phone occasionally. he doesn’t even flip through it, just tosses it around mostly and i don’t mind. he doesn’t really like playing with his toys so i give him new things ; pots and pans , spoons, stuff from the recycle bin :P. it keeps him busy for a while…
Re: does your toddler
why don’t you enroll her in some playschool or nursery where she can spend good 2 to 3 hrs check something near your house on walking distance
