Does Time really exist?

So does it according to you?

Which side are you on -physicists who believe time is an illusion since the flow of time is not really accounted for in the equations of physics or physicists who believe time exists and can be described using multiple theories -the theory of relativity, string theory, entropy process, etc etc…?

Time runs independent of our physical world, do you agree or disagree? Can we really say it exists only in our head and that every moment in time and space exists simultaneously? If time doesn’t exist, how would one explain the aging process, decaying of particles, the passage of time- it only goes forward!

P.S. I believe time exists, time provides structure to our reality. It’s an entity we are not able to measure just yet. Also, I am really bored…

Re: Does Time really exist?

The simple answer to this question is that if Calender exists then definitely time exist as Egyptians were the first who invented time by the shadow and after that modern clocks were invented which provides us great details of the times.

Re: Does Time really exist?

What is time and when it was started and when will it end? We don’t know - therefore anyone claim to travel back or forward in time is absolutely baseless.

Re: Does Time really exist?

Nice topic..

I personally dont believe in existance of time.. but physicists says that it exists.. they dont have any clue or solid proof..

but to your second part.. somehow it convinces about the half life time of matter/particle.. they grow old and decompose.. like if you’re cooking chicken, it takes several moments(time) to fry.. this only thing is convincing that things/processes require time.. other than that its nothing..

Scientifically even our sun have past its half life..

Re: Does Time really exist?

Time is a measurable and observable thing which means it does exist..

Re: Does Time really exist?

Space-time are inseparable from aspects of same fundamental reality. Time exists, as its give relevance to space, and vice versa. I am billions of minutes apart from the time I was born, but I am also millions of light years away from the place I was actually born. The universe, the galaxies, the stars, and their solar systems all are travelling apart with gigantic speeds. The exact time and space in the Cosmos where Earth was when I was born, I have left it behind, a long long way.

Re: Does Time really exist?

Time indeed exists. When ever we talk of speed, we’re talking about time. Time started with the big bang. The idea of time travel is not that far fetched theoretically. I’m talking about the kind of time travel that was shown in ‘back to the future’ movies. Where we can see our past-selves and possibly talk to our past-selves. In the theory describing multi-verse, it says that there are nearly infinite number of universes in existence with their own big bangs.

Re: Does Time really exist?

Back to the future uses human based calender?

Re: Does Time really exist?

^^^Yes. The movie’s time travel revolves around the multiverse theory. As far as I’ve been able to understand the multiverse, the idea was floated because our galaxy has some fundamental constant values that are extremely precise set before big bang which raises the question that how come they are so precise. Multiverse theory says that they are so precise by random chance because there are an infinite number of universes with varying constants and one of those universes happens to be ours.

In the movie, the car(time machine) travels to universes having similar(not same) constants. The sequence in which their big bangs would have occurred will determine whether that’s past or future.

Re: Does Time really exist?

Learned just now that legendary Stephen Hawking had his last paper about multiverse.

Re: Does Time really exist?

what does me able to talk to my past things have to do with multi-verse?

Re: Does Time really exist?

^^^Multiverse is a theoretical construct without physical proof but if Multiverse exists then each universe in it has its own fundamental constants - including the moment of its big bang. For example, our universe’s big bang occured ~13.7 billion years ago. Let’s say I had to travel 20 years in the past. For that I’ll have to travel to a universe that has all its fundamental constants the same as our universe except for the time of its big bang being 20 years behind. The idea of time travel then is, that over there hopefully life would have been very similar - including presence of a version of myself 20 years younger.

I know it’s convoluted but nevertheless theoretically possible.

Re: Does Time really exist?

^^^Noticed a mistake and since I can’t edit the previous post now so here is the correction. In order to travel 20 years in the past, I will have to travel to a universe whose big bang occurred 20 years later than that of our galaxy.
