Does this come across as bad?

Re: Does this come across as bad?

I call my kids aap, my juniors & subordinates aap, my younger brothers and cousins aap. I think its good manners to say aap.

Re: Does this come across as bad?

^ true...magar kuchh log aap to kahte haiN magar saath meN jaao/khaao/piyo kahte haiN, jaise:

aap khaao
aap jaao
aap piyo

dar asl, ise yuN honaa chaahiye:

aap khaaiye
aap jaaiye
aap pijiye

i dunno how this bad grammar crept in to our speech.

Re: Does this come across as bad?

I very rarely ever use “tum”…regardless if it’s family, friends or my kids…it’s always “aap”. My husband and I are 3 yrs apart in age, had a “love marriage” and I do not call him by his name. I don’t call him anything really, it’s always “Suniyay…or Sunai’n”. (and yes, I am born and raised in the US). I am the only one in my family like this lol…all my khalas, mamis, cousins etc call their husbands by name, but for some reason, I just never did/could. It’s not something he asked/expected/imposed either. When I refer to him in conversation with someone else, I use his name of course, but never, ever when I’m speaking to him directly or calling out to him

And he uses “aap” with me as well.

Re: Does this come across as bad?

Yeah thats Lahori style, something I disliked while studying there, but gradually got into habit of it as well have shrugged it off now.

Re: Does this come across as bad?

good. :) vaise, "N" [nasal N] lagaane se bhii jumla respectful ban jaataa hai, jaise:

aap khaayeN
aap jaayeN
aap piyeN

:)

Re: Does this come across as bad?

So rare these days!

Re: Does this come across as bad?

i've noticed that most husbands refer to their wives as "TUM" while their wives address them as "AAP".

my ex-GF used to call me AAP and i used to call her TUM. once i asked her to call me TUM as well...she said: "laRkiyoN ko AAP aur laRkoN ko TUM kahnaa ziyaada achchhaa lagtaa hai" :)

Re: Does this come across as bad?

Reminds me of something when I was young. In Punjabi adding ‘yu’ is sign of respect like “Nasal N”. I was talking to my dad and said, “passport dyo” which in urdu would be “passport deiN”.
One of my urdu speaking teahcers was present there i thought i said, “passport do”, he gave me a long lecture that I should speak respectfully to my dad. :smack:

Re: Does this come across as bad?

I know lol..I get teased a lot in the family, but it also feels sweet…I’m an old soul :khatti:
