Size does matter . In some salans you put chopped and browned by frying and in some you use browned by frying and then make a paste to mix in it in salan. In some salans you add lightly fried onions , and in some you mix raw onions.
All to alter the taste, texture and aroma of that salan. Now do you want me to prepare an Excel sheet to show you which kind of onions go with which salan ?

Honestly for a very long time I have been using my MIL’s way fo chopping onions and tomatoes, which is long thin slices of onion and chunks of tomato…I’ve never noticed a difference though from this way and the way I used to do it before…
