"Does the Qur'an , revealed in seventh-century Arabia , address today's needs?"

This is a rather common question. And, its underlying assumption is that either the Qur’an has to be set aside or that some of its “inconvenient” parts have to be amended.

First, we must ask these people whether they believe that Allah revealed the Qur’an as a book of guidance for humanity (Qur’an, 2:2). It should be noted that the Qur’an reveals a number of mathematical and historical miracles, as well as scientific truths that we have discovered only recently. The fact that these scientific truths which could not be known at the time of the Qur’an’s revelation are in complete conformity with it strongly indicates that the Qur’an is the word of Allah. Those who have doubts about the Qur’an, despite these facts, are called out to, as follows:

If you have doubts about what We have sent down to Our servant, produce another sura equal to it, and call your witnesses, besides Allah, if you are telling the truth. If you do not do that—and you will not do it—then fear the Fire whose fuel is people and stones, made ready for the unbelievers. (Qur’an, 2:23-24)

Certainly, those who assert that the Qur’an is written by man are not Muslims, regardless of their professions of faith. What is interesting, however, is that there are also some who claim that “the Qur’an cannot address today’s needs” yet assert that they are Muslims. If they persist in their claim, they can be placed in only two groups: those who are ignorant of religion and know nothing about the Qur’an, or those who hesitate to declare their unbelief openly.

People who are somewhat conversant with the Qur’anic commands can never advocate such a fallacy. However, those who fail to notice that the Qur’an is the just Book revealed by Allah as the only accurate source of guidance applicable to all times and every society often advocate that very fallacy. People who read the Qur’an with an open mind recognize that the kind of people and societies described therein have existed throughout history as well as in our day. The Qur’an gives an account of all of the wrongs, misdeeds, and distortions committed by those societies that are far from religious morality. Their reactions to Allah’s message and the detailed character descriptions instruct us today, which are further indications that the Qur’an addresses all times and all people. Those who are committed to reading the Qur’an and to living by it will witness, with an ever-deepening faith, that it permeates their lives, for the Qur’an gives a detailed account of what events they will face and the ideal behaviors expected of them.

The Qur’an also refers to one unreasonable judgment, “society is an ever-evolving system, and religion, with its static texture, falls short of its needs,” and declares that this view is based upon a lack of comprehension unique to unbelievers. As the Qur’an informs us, unbelievers who lived thousands of years ago also referred to religion as ** “myths and legends of previous peoples”** (Qur’an, 16:24) In the same manner, unbelievers who lived at the time of the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh), asked him to amend certain parts of the Qur’an. As we read:

When Our Clear Signs are recited to them, those who do not expect to meet Us say: “Bring a Qur’an other than this one or change it.” Say: “It is not for me to change it of my own accord. I follow nothing except what is revealed to me. I fear, were I to disobey my Lord, the punishment of a Dreadful Day.” (Qur’an, 10:15)

The unbelievers to whom the above verse refers were living at the Prophet’s (pbuh) time and actually witnessed the Qur’an’s revelation. They objected only because adhering to the Qur’an’s morality would, in their opinion, harm their interests.

This situation also is true for today. Those who benefit from the established system of ignorance inevitably oppose the morality and the lifestyle introduced by Islam. You frequently hear these people talk about reforming the Qur’an. In actuality, these are nothing but efforts to make the Qur’an conform to their own ignorant order.

However, these are all futile efforts, for in compliance with ** “We have sent down the Reminder, and We will preserve it,”** (Qur’an, 15:9) each letter of the Qur’an is preserved exactly as it was revealed to the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh). The Qur’an is Allah’s final message to humanity, and so divine revelation has ceased. Thus, the Qur’an is—and will remain—the only way to salvation for the rest of time.

Re: "Does the Qur'an , revealed in seventh-century Arabia , address today's needs?"

MQ - a number of questions for you:

what mathematical formulae and scientific theories are revealed in the Holy Quran?

what is a sura? if that means a text of a particular philosophy, I'd suggest any of the Upanishads, The Gita, The Bible, The Tora etc as equally viable texts.

why does the Quron resort to threats such as "if you do not, and you will not, the rsult will be fire ...stones....for the unbelievers"? Don't they know humans respond better to reason than threats?

I do think very strongly that Quran needs to be updated significantly - whether it is to clarify how people understand and practice it or to actually change the intrinsic principle, in following areas:

1) Polygamy & the inequality of men and women in society
2) The concept of only way to God is by believing in Islam and everyone else is an infidel
3) That unprovoked killing can under any circumstance be considered an act of martyrdom
4) That if some thing or principle is not directly traceable to Quran, then it somehow needs to be validated by stretching something from it!

What do you say?

Re: “Does the Qur’an , revealed in seventh-century Arabia , address today’s needs?”

And it is We who have constructed the heaven with might, and verily, it is We who are steadily expanding it. (Surat adh-Dhariyat: 47)

Another characteristic of heavenly bodies is that they also rotate around their own axes. This may be one of the implications of the verse “* by Heaven with its cyclical systems.” (Surat at-Tariq: 11)

It is He Who created night and day and the sun and moon, each one swimming in a sphere. (Surat al-Anbiya’: 33)

And the sun runs to its resting place. That is the decree of the Almighty, the All-Knowing. (Surah Ya Sin: 38)

We made the sky a preserved and protected roof yet still they turn away from Our Signs.. (Surat al-Anbiya: 32)

By Heaven with its cyclical systems. (Surat at-Tariq: 11)

It is He Who created everything on the earth for you and then directed His attention up to heaven and arranged it into seven regular heavens. He has knowledge of all things. (Surat al-Baqara: 29)

Then He turned to heaven when it was smoke. In two days He determined them as seven heavens and revealed, in every heaven, its own mandate. (Surah Fussilat: 12)

Btw I’ll gladly help you understand the above in case you cant on your own.

The above verses were from Surahs. A Surah is a part of the Quran. It is not the text of a particular philosophy - but rather the words of the Quran. A way of life. The rest are just that, the Bibe, the Tora etc - we’re talking about the Quran.

Why do we have laws? And do people hand you cookies when you break laws?

  1. The Quran doesnt need to be changed. People need to aim to rid themselves of their ignorance. Men and women in Islam are equal in their own rights. If you do not know that you need to visit the basics of Islam. In fact Islam was the first religion to recognize the full rights of women - or shall I say “people.”

2)There is only one God and only one true religion. I wouldnt be a Muslim if I belieevd otherwise. And a person who is not a believer is an unbeliever.

  1. You obviously do not know anything about martyrdom esp when you’re relating it to Islam. I’ll leave that to you and google or maybe a dictionary.

  2. Islam is away of life.

Re: "Does the Qur'an , revealed in seventh-century Arabia , address today's needs?"

^ when you claim mathematical and scientific revealations, it is insufficient to simply say "we created everything". Every God, every religion claim that. Where is the mathematics or science in this?

How does the words of Quran become a way of life? because it says so?

If Quran said men and women are equal, then why are you so afraid to admit polygamy needs to be abolished and if Sharia allows it, it should be changed, to reflect what the Quran says?

Ofcourse a person who doesn't believe something is a 'non-believer' of that thing. Big deal!

Re: “Does the Qur’an , revealed in seventh-century Arabia , address today’s needs?”

It is a myth. The actual translation of Quran from Arabic is different, what we have are vague interpretations. And I can bat that these interpretations differ from each other in different centuries, even in different decades. Who proves that Quran is a complete science? Semi-literate Mullahs, or some unknown scientists, or sometime the Islamic media prints some matter on behalf of any established scientist, mostly who is dead, and further the claim is not countered, that helps the Islamic media.

I pick up the first two examples of Madam Muslim queen, let us see how some other learnt Muslims interpret the same suras….

051.047 Adh-Dharyat
YUSUFALI: With power and skill did We construct the Firmament: for it is We Who create the vastness of pace.
PICKTHAL: We have built the heaven with might, and We it is Who make the vast extent (thereof).
SHAKIR: And the heaven, We raised it high with power, and most surely We are the makers of things ample.

086.011 Al-Tariq
YUSUFALI: By the Firmament which returns (in its round),
PICKTHAL: By the heaven which giveth the returning rain,
SHAKIR: I swear by the raingiving heavens,

It is not translation, but interpretation, where the interpreters have tried to put up their own words into the suras. So, where is science?

Quran does not need an update. It needs to be taken away from the grip of semi-literate Mullahas, or at least if Muslims do not send their minors to Madrisa for learning Quran, half of the work will be done.*

Re: "Does the Qur'an , revealed in seventh-century Arabia , address today's needs?"

^ does Quron say polygamy (1 to 4) is alright?

Re: "Does the Qur'an , revealed in seventh-century Arabia , address today's needs?"

^
yes it does sweety....
and do u think men today r not capable of handling 4 women and hence polygamy shud be abolished????

Re: "Does the Qur'an , revealed in seventh-century Arabia , address today's needs?"

Why we have to think that Quran is a scientific book or journal. It is but words from God, however he has decided to reveal. Can we not take it as it is.

On the other hand when God says He has created all the universe, (including all the science existing it in, is it very difficult to accept)???

Re: "Does the Qur'an , revealed in seventh-century Arabia , address today's needs?"

I 'm really surprised that the man from atlantis has again questioned some thing he has no knowledge about..In my previous conversations with him, it became quite evident that he has no knowledge of the quran or even islam..he is asking questions just for the sake of it..i gave him a very comprehensive explanation of what the quran says about polygamy, but he ignored it..I can only conclude that no matter what viable explanation u may give him of islam, he will continue to disregard the view & continue to be critical of anything that has anything to do with Islam..His ideas of Islam are based purely on blind opinions and have no substance (or any research of Islam)..I suggest that he should try to read and understand the Quran first and then try to make an argument, something i suggested to him b4, but in vain. He's just coming back and asking the same questions to which he does'nt have a clue what Isalm says about..i can only pity him!!!
