Does Teaching in Pakistan stops your professional Growth?

Hi all !

I am a member of the CS club as most of you are. I live in Pakistan, currently applying for MS/PhD admssions abroad and in Pakistan. Meanwhile i decided to utilize my free time and teach in variuos computer institutes in lahore. I was talking to a friend and we were arguing if Teaching stops you from growing and evovling as a computer professional? What do you ppl think? Kindly do not forget that i m in Pakistan. I have experienced some real benefits of Teaching previuosly but i wann aknow your opinions..

P.S Reply anyway even if you dont know about PAkistan market or trend.. just answer it as a general teaching perpective.

I have been living in Austria all my life until I got the chance to teach at a computer college in Lahore for one semester. I also had two other offers for that semester from Spain and from the US, but I chose to go to Pakistan. And I never regretted that decision.

It was the time of my life. Absolutely wonderful, as it was the first time that I spent more than just “holidays” in Pakistan.

And over here it didn’t have any negative impact on my professional growth at all. In fact, my career benefitted from it. After coming back to Austria I rejoined the company, that I had been working for before going to Pakistan and within a few months I got promoted as well.

So if you have the chance: Do it! :k:

Depends on what you teach. Teaching computers 101 to 4th graders might harm your professional growth.

umar Yeah i taught a few classes a whileback and it was a fruitful experience. But there might be some drawbacks which are not visible not me maybe. so i wanna know if anyone had a bad experiecne while teaching and struggled as a result later on. Thanks for your reply, appreciated.

aishaA yeah in schools, there will Never be anything new. thanks.

umm saby baji :p] i would say no…if you want to do it then go ahead…it really depends on u personally…u can mould urself professionally however u want…teaching won’t matter…i feel like its all abt having motivation to do what u want to do in ur profession…at the end of the day everything is upto u and ur personal choices and priorities…
hmm…the answer is kinda vague but u know what i am saying na…
if u want real like examples: some of the ppl who teach us cs courses in my uni also work off n on in the cs industry and some work there part time waghera toh i dont think teaching affects it…
there’s other profs who for example, took three yrs off and went mountain climbing in nepal and then came back, and resumed teaching…
i’m just tryina say k ppl do SUCH different n unrelated things in life but when they really wanna make a professional comeback, they just need drive then…
so i think agar aap ka dil hae kerne ka teaching u shud go for it :k:
also when u r applying for PHD’s and masters, specially for phd, it will be a plus and u can say that u r doing phd coz u wanna teach in the future and thats gona be a plus in ur application…
best of luck :k:

p.s. waisay baycharay students who will be taught by u :stuck_out_tongue: :hehe:

saby,

doesn't matter where u are teaching. however, teaching in general does have an effect on one's professional career. by professional, i assume working in the work industry.

when i say teaching, it does not mean giving some intro/temp lectures
in a private institue. i take it that one is planning to teach
in a [good] university and is serious to pursue this profession. be it in pak or abroad; its [almost] the same everywhere.

first of all in order to be appointed as a lecturer/instrcutor in a uni, u will need to have ATLEAST an ms and ofcourse teaching experience too. then the uni would hire u[if u get selected that is] on need basis and u will be fried when they don't need u anymore.

now if u are keen to excel in teaching, then u will need to get a
phd. and recruiter's from the work industry do not prefer to hire
doctor's[for different reasons] and even if a company does, u will probably end up working in the research department.

it would depend on what u want to do, for how long and how u plan.
