Does Media influence the youth?

hi

Re: Does Media influence the youth?

hello

you wanna expand on the discussion a little more than just 'hi'?

Re: Does Media influence the youth?

It's like asking if eating too much causes obesity :)

Re: Does Media influence the youth?

of course it does

Re: Does Media influence the youth?

Media does have a strong influence on youth, esp. the advertises. In fact, advertisers go after youth because they know they have a strong spending power and are easily attracted/convinced.

I feel silly music videos also have strong influence on youth. I see kids dressed up all weird just as people do in the music videos. Heck they even try to walk, talk and act like them. Pathetic!

Re: Does Media influence the youth?

Of course it does, Pakistani youth more so than anyone else because they are very simple minded and gullible, not only youth but also the Paki elders.

Anything that’s glamorised on TV they want to do, if Americans/British are doing something they want to do it too to fit into that ‘perfect’ image, even if it be something they wont particularly enjoy doing.

Food is a classic example, when I was a kid we’d go for summer vacations every year to visit family in Pakistan, in our areas the extended family all lives in one big Haveli with each nuclear family having it’s own living quarters but catering was always joint, my grandmother (R.I.P) would get the servant to go down town to buy crates of pop for her foreign grandchildren, to us British and American cousins it was like Lassi is to them, they would always jest at us for drinking the “yucky prickly stuff”, few years later with increased adverts and commercialisation they’re all drinking it!!! Nobody drinks buttermilk or green tea anymore its all Pepsi and Fanta.

We’d go out for ‘picnics’ and all the Pakis always wanted to eat bargar, now no person in his right mind could enjoy those sort of burgers, they were nasty, nothing like the juicy succulent burgers we have over here, they were surprised when I told them I’d much rather try the local delicacies, mouth watering pilaffs, kebabs with naan, deep fried fish, million of different types of beverages from teas to fruit juices and they were choosing the crappy chemical crap over the proper wholesome stuff.

I tell you what else I found really funny, whenever my white American/British aunts visited Pak they would like a cup of coffee every so often (to them it’s like qahva is to us), my Paki aunts just to be like them (never having had coffee in their lives) would brew up a mug and drink it like it was cough medicine, should have seen the expressions on their faces.

Mobile phones are another unnecessary trend over there, even people who clearly can't afford such luxuries have to possess a mobile, I've seen uneducated men using an up to date high tech phone whilst he's ploughing the fields, I bet half of them can't even understand the English wording on them, they go to such ridiculous lengths to mimic what they see in the movies, they're just creating more hardships for themselves when they could have been perfectly happy if they stuck to the simple lifestyle, like they say in our language "you should assess the size of your duvet/blanket before stretching out your legs.
