I think there is no concept of ‘friendship’ in ‘Islam’ regardless to gender except the incident of Hazrat Ibrahim a.s. The word which is used is ‘Companion’. If we study the life of any ‘Companion’ from the time of Prophet 
than we’ll read that they (in short words) spend time with their family, work and in a gathering ‘Majlis’. Such gathering were about the remembrance of Almighty Allah.
