Does India's future look heartily promising en route to World Cup?

With the likes of Raina and Yuvraj in the team with Dhoni and Pathan as back-ups, yes it does. Indeed it does!

India vs. England - Post-Series Discussion

Suresh Raina - An individual who single-handedly has transformed the backbone of Indian Cricket and has thrusted himself as one of the pillars at the top of the mountain as the major strike force and key players in the side in his such a short but illustrious and celebrated stay of his International Career - only nineteen (19) matches with a batting average of approximately 41; A magnificient and life-long 48 in this past series alone, with a strike rate of 91, alongwith the highest run-scorer throughout by topping the list at 242, merely a third behind his other partner-in-crime, Yuvraj Singh, with a strike rate of ~111 with him being second highest run-scorer, following Raina, at a monumental 237. Dhoni is not too far away in his accomplishments either, as he himself has selectively chosen to stay in the limelight once again, and through his own efforts and hard-hitting, is currently standing with an average of 59 with a bucket-full of 177 runs, only fourth in the bulleted list followed by Dravid, with a strike rate of almost 91. In this quest of finding and molding young seeds (players) into fruits of tomorrow, let’s also not forget Pathan and Dravid, who, on a given day, are capable of turning the balance of the game by themselves if they happen to remain at the crease for a longer period of time.

In light to the above and now the series has come to a glittering and scintillating end for India, it is extremely refreshing and exhilarating to note that the Chappell/Dravid methodology is still in the works with a sparkling light that fails to dim, and the set of proven principles of testing out fresh players from the bunch and pitting them at a grueling task straight-away is a mental challenge, not only for those who are out there in such a tiresome heat in front of a rowdy and packed stadium, but are also taking full-use of the oppportunities provided to them by the management and are maximizing the advantages out of it. It will be particularly interesting to witness the backbone in the upcoming Future Tours Programme as it hopefully gets strengthened, day by day, match by match, and season by season. By the time World Cup is in the picture, and from the looks of the current scene itself, I am sure that the several major-league paramount players mentioned above, alongwith a handful of those sitting in the bench waiting to get their hands dirty in the mix, are more than capable to harness and absorb the pressure and putting the fourth gear back in motion if needed be, and taking the present scenery in the making alongwith us, the prime capital and the dominating cardinal that is built-in inside their “hunger-for-more” systems by default will prove to be a major force in the Carribean.

Onto the negatives; there is always bound to be a few minus points, regardless of whether the talk spreads on the subject of cricket, life, love, or any other closely-related aspect that a man has known since the existence of time. Munaf Patel - I have repeatedly insisted over the course of past few weeks and have literally begged to the selectors to include him into the side no matter what the circumstances. Yes, we all know how the duo of Irfan/SreeSanth can be destructive in their own habits and manners, but I would really like to see Patel in the ODI side for the World Cup, and having said that, it is only a matter of time when the big moment is upon us; and one simply cannot afford to miss out on this breakthrough opening by letting the pace of Munaf slip on the side while the garbage likes of Agarkar is continuously picked for reasons only known to Sharad Powar and unknown to the rest of the world. Granted that VRV and RP do need a couple of more chances in order for the selectors to stamp a final note on their International envelope, Munaf Patel is an individual, who, have displayed a great deal of promise and guaranteed assurance in the Test Series with his enormous quality pace of fast-bowling, and one has to sieze the moment and allow him back in the squad for every single match from hereon after. Only practice will make him perfect, and you cannot expect him to bowl out the entire opposition, let alone take a single wicket if he is not given enough opportunities to play with.

The debut emergence of Uthappa - Does this translate into the fact that we are finally going to drop Sehwag? Or will the latter form the opening pair alongwith the former?

Last but not the least, Mohammad Kaif should have been given this last match to prove his worth. I will be surprised if he is dropped from the next two Abu Dhabi games as well. Seems like selectors have given up all hopes and have pushed such a vast talent aside with no memory recollections. I will remain optimistic on him and hope that he will find his form back, sooner rather than later. A exceedingly quality player that will be eminently dreadful to keep on the sidelines, and very quietly, at that.

Re: Does India's future look heartily promising en route to World Cup?

Please wait till India plays other good teams. I am not trying to degrade India's performance, but beating a 2nd string England side isn't a big accomplishment.

Re: Does India's future look heartily promising en route to World Cup?

i dont know about this, although indian batting lineup is good enough, Australia, SA, and Newzealand and tough too. I think india tied with SA in the previous series because nicky boje and herchelle gibbs were not playing. Both are important players for SA. Every1 knows abt australia. I dont know if india has enough to take it all the way. I think if Tendulakar can deliver like he has done in previous world cup india has a chance, otherwise it'll be tough

Re: Does India's future look heartily promising en route to World Cup?

India is much better side than what it was just one year back for OneDays. Four new players seems to have given it lots of strength Raina, Pathan, Dhoni and Yuvraj (With his form), if we can take gamble of Powar as well, when you have 5 new utility players with
1. Batsman who can bowl - Raina
2. Batsman bowler - Yuvraj
3. Batsman Keeper - Dhoni
4. All Rounder - Pathan (I think he deserves this tag now)
5. Bowler batsman - Powar

This has made look both batting and bowling more balanced.
Bowlers _ its good to have Sreesanth, RP, Munaf and VRV. Though there were Nehra/Balaji ealrlier. Hence impact is more prominent due to above 4-5.
In estabilished team only team left is Australia (this team played SL/ Pakistan/England and SA) in last year.

They did badly in tests, shows that may be all new guys aren't as accomplished in technique hence its about team clicking together........ :-)

Re: Does India's future look heartily promising en route to World Cup?

Sirjee... India or Indians, As per verb it should be India.... :-)..
On winning spree of chases, ofcourse they are on high buddy.. One or two losses and you can have this team soon being chopped and relooked at...

Re: Does India's future look heartily promising en route to World Cup?

India are currently miles ahead in the ODI arena as compared to Pakistan. Their fielding is on another planet but the main difference is in the batting AND strategy. Their captain opens the batting despite having the luxury of having several quality openers to choose from. They have had the guts to try different things and to blood youngsters unlike Pakistan.

Also unlike Pakistan ALL of India's young guns have repaid the faith my PEFORMING when the chips are down. There were no brain freezes and batting collapses once the Indian batting is cruising towards a target. Kudos to them. Compare that with how Pakistan routinely screws it up from a comfortable position and barely makes it home or loses (last ODI against England).

Re: Does India's future look heartily promising en route to World Cup?

skhan, like I have said before...you are my twin brother on the other side of the border.

Re: Does India's future look heartily promising en route to World Cup?

^ Yeah, both are pessimism personified, India or Pak can beat the best of the world on their respective days. No harm in being critical of your team, but being eternally pessimistic is not good. :)

Re: Does India's future look heartily promising en route to World Cup?

Dhobi bhai,
Cheers to all the Indian fans for brilliant "whooping" of English side.

First of all, a brilliant post-analysis of India-England series. Honestly, I haven't watched a single game of the series but I kept a keen eye on the bulletins on Crininfo and some good highlights courtesy of Fkhan.
Firstly, India deserves the credit for thrashing England in pretty much all games of the ODI except the one @ Jamshedpur. I guess the ground their is prone to India losing there. Anyways, looking @ the stats you provided, Raina, Yuvraj and Dhoni all played a significant role in pretty much all the games. The most intriguing thing is they are all lower order batsmen. None of them come as an opener or even one down. In other words, they are a strong, well protected middle order.
On the bowling side, you got a good combination of Pathan, Sreesanth and Singh working out well. I would agree with you that Patel should definitely be given chances in ODIs as he will improve, no doubt about that. His strong show in his debut test and the later one in Mumbai, should be a good indicator of his perseverence for Cricket of both forms.

One thing that strikes me is that all these wins have been made without any(I mean any) strong scores from Sehwag or even Kaif. Imagine, these 2 wickets going like leaves in air and still India stood really steadfast with these two players. If you talk about consistency, I really appreciate the effort but somewhere some one should ask a question, "What the heck is goin on with Sehwag and Kaif?"

The new player Robin Uthapa(forgive me if I spelled incorrectly), seems to be going good too. I mean, this team is better than any Indian team I have seen in let's say last 2 or 3 years. Also, India didn't have services of Tendulkar so that shows they are very strong mentally and working real hard on the team, not on individual players.
Also, in all fairness, credit goes to Dravid that he puts his team to bowl first even he wins the toss. This really shows he is mastering the technique and his belief in his players is at the pinnacle of hill. NOt only that, his use of himself has been brilliant and before I forget, Yuvraj Singh is been lethal like never before.

Now to your million dollar question, "Does India's future look heartily promising en route to World Cup?" If taken under this time and circumstances, I'm going to say "absolutely yes." If you take a look around world teams, after Aus I would rank India. SA would probably (in my view) be #3 and if Indian team goes just like they are now, we'll probably need McGrath, Akram, Younis, Pollock and Murli in one team from stopping them to win the ultimate prize bond.

Over all, a great team combination which provides "worth" watching games and also for other teams to look out for.

Re: Does India's future look heartily promising en route to World Cup?

It has been dream 6 month for India's ODI team as far as winning is concerned. But as far as worldcup is concerned I think they still have long way to go but team is shaping up well. My biggest concern is that team is peaking up too soon. This will create too much frenzy in India and there is all likelyhood that Team and management will get caught into it. I hope they lose a few soon and have a close series in Abudhabi and West Indies. Batting looks good specailly when Sachin will be back. Uthappa shows promise but thats just one game.It is too early to say anything. Raina is great prospect. Looks like he will have a long career. But then Raina & Dhoni havent played anything outside subcontinent. Though Indian won a lot recently but one shouldnot read too much into it. Except for win in Pakistan I dont think other win were that extra-ordinary. Beating 2nd rate SL and England was always on card but margin of victory was good. Neverthless it was a 2nd string team. When SA was here , they dominated Indians and we were lucky to salvage 2-2 draw. So all is not good.

Bowling is still big concern. Apart from Pathan I dont see others doing great outside India. Apart from Harbhajan others lack experience. Harbhajan had a great sereis but his overseas record is mediocre at best. Sreesanth and other have long way to go. Romesh Powar showed promise and with his batting he will give India good depth. But when playing overseas India will always have this confusion about who to play..Harbhajan or Powar.

If we look at worldcup then I give a fit Pak ,SA & NZL team a better shot at worldcup than India. Specially Pakistan if Shoib and Asif are fully fit.
