Does Coke Cause cancer?

Some news are coming out and people are worried.

Pancreatic cancer and leukemia are some concerns.

Sugar-Sweetened Soft Drink Consumption and Risk of Pancreatic Cancer in Two Prospective Cohorts ? Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention

It is a general topic but mods can move it to health section if find more appropriate.

Re: Does Coke Cause cancer?

khud pee kar dekh lo

Conclusion: Although soft drink consumption did not influence pancreatic cancer risk among men, consumption of sugar-sweetened soft drinks may be associated with a modest but significant increase in risk among women who have an underlying degree of insulin resistance.

Didn't affect men, Did affect women with underlying health issues.

If carbonated drinks were so harmful, they would be taken off the market within hours.

Everything in moderation.

Re: Does Coke Cause cancer?

Huma, glad you read the conclusion. Very good.

On Feb 8th, 2010 ABC news says this..about Coke and 7-UP

Soft Drinks Linked to Pancreatic Cancer Risk - ABC News

The author acknowledged that soft drink consumers are more likely than abstainers to participate in other unhealthy behaviors, including smoking and overeating, which makes it **difficult to determine that soft drink consumption is an independent risk factor for pancreatic cancer. *"We could not rule out the possibility of residual confounding by factors associated with the habit of drinking soft drinks or other unascertained factors such as waist circumference," they wrote.*

This study did not prove anything. Its only a theory that high consumption of sugar may develop pancreatic cancer. And we've always been told how high sugar levels, high salt levels, high fat levels etc etc etc are associated with various health problems.

My mother is a diabetic and at one point she wasn't even allowed to eat mangoes because of the high sugar content of mangoes.

yes it does
aswell as disolve your teeth

i suppose the likeliest route to trouble is unhealthy diet>gallstones>acute pancreatitis(not nice)>chronic pancreatitis>dead

perhaps one of the symptoms of an unhealthy diet is coke consumption

Cancer is a disease of multifactorial factors, cause or etiology.

No study will find an independent cause or risk factor of a cancer even smoking is not an independent cause or risk factor of pancreatic cancer. Meaning, not all smokers will develop pancreatic cancer and not all people with pancreatic cancer have smoked in their lives.

So while authors of these kind of articles are correct in not really finding a 'definite cause' for the disease like cancer, but finding an an association is justified and should be look at more closely.

You did not mention anything about ABC news and the study quoted there. :)

Re: Does Coke Cause cancer?

It did happen to me a couple of weeks back when I and my cousin(aged 16) were sitting in a hotel's lobby. There wrere a group of Europeans sitting there and my cousin started acquainting with them.It seems one of those guys asked my cousin what drink he preferred and he immediately answered coke. Then they advised him not to use it and they said they used it to clean up their bathrooms,as it is a good germicide !!!
