Does Ashoka Desilva belonged to Elite panel?

Bias could influence an umpire performance against certain team or teams, but he could perform an excellent job if he doesn’t want to be biased. While being incompetent could spoil a good game for any one at any time or on any day.

Ashoka seemed like very incompetent, and feel tremendous pressure while umpiring. If he says to make decision against Lara or Inzi, he may closes his eyes and ignore it since he thinks this is a big wicket, while if he has to make a decision against Gayle or Sarwan, he may make a wrong and fast decision to prove his confidence.

I think he better be posted as a third umpire in all games where Simon Tufel and/or Aleem Dar are officiatings, so that he could learn something, before ICC send him to the field.

Re: Does Ashoka Desilva belonged to Elite panel?

I kinda agree.

He is not the best Umpire to be in a test match of this calibre. He needs to be sent to useless Twenty20 games for training.

Re: Does Ashoka Desilva belonged to Elite panel?

Yah I feel kinda bad that two decisions went in our favor, anyway nice signature smooth_guy.

Re: Does Ashoka Desilva belonged to Elite panel?

This guy is basically just another Darrel Hair. Where Hair gave incorrect decisions because he was biased, Asoka gives incorrect decisions because he is incompetent. Either way, cricket is the loser. It's about time the ICC needs to stop burying its head in the sand and start some concrete measures on umpiring accountability.

Re: Does Ashoka Desilva belonged to Elite panel?

There are quite a few of them out there. But lets not beat up a guy based on one bad match.
If he proves time and time again then ICC will change him eventually. umpiring is not easy. Name a few that were world class players before becoming umpires. It is a thankless job and I would think they get bored and tired by standing there and watching all day , every day. Yes its the job they signed up for but all of this will lead to errors. IF ICC would have more umpires available it would not be a bad idea to change umpires all together after half of the day. So basically for one test match you can have 2 additional umpires and they change after half of the day everyday.

Re: Does Ashoka Desilva belonged to Elite panel?

I don't think he is in the ICC Elite panel anymore, probably he is in ICC International panel umpires.

He use to be an umpire with the elite panel but was out of it after series of failures in number of games couple of years ago.

He never deserved to be in the elite panel and still is not competent to be a part of it. Whoever thinks that the poor guy made few mistakes in the recently concluded match needs to understand that Mr. Desilva is a master of F..ups and thats why was kicked out of the elite panel

Re: Does Ashoka Desilva belonged to Elite panel?

most probably ICC appointed him to compensate Pakistan for all the Hair's decisions but then he went overboard and did not give LARA's plumb LBW when it was hitting middle of middle stump :)

Re: Does Ashoka Desilva belonged to Elite panel?

Ok ..so de silva is the exception to my somewhat lenient reasoning for umpiring mistakes...
I do remember his name as I've been watching cricket before there were third umpires even...

Re: Does Ashoka Desilva belonged to Elite panel?

well.. isn't that the case for most bad umpires...there decisions cut both ways usually.
The odds of them hurting only one side in a match are very stiff mostly!

Re: Does Ashoka Desilva belonged to Elite panel?

^ That’s true and that’s the difference b/w incompetent umpire (D'Silva) and biased umpire (Hair)

Re: Does Ashoka Desilva belonged to Elite panel?

^true…
and that Ashoka is on the international panel still
where as

hair

is

not…:yahoo:

Re: Does Ashoka Desilva belonged to Elite panel?

I totally agree with mr fkhan2 and this guy was removed from the panel because of his incompetencies. As far as bad decisions going both ways are concern, one may accept it but if you see this guy is only making bad decisions for big names, which mean he is doing things under pressure not under judgement. In both innings when Lara was out LWB (first innings at zero) he didn't give him out, while Gayle wasn't 100% out in first innings and Sarwan wasn't out in second innings so he gave them out. I am not sure if kaneria was caught behind.

Now if you are talking of fatigue factor, then they should give him some office job and let umpires like Tufel, Dar, Bird, Sheffard, Harper, Bowden do the job.

I think ICC (specifically Speed an Australian, and Gwasker an Indian) intentionally appionted Ashoka to teach Pakistan a lesson for objecting on an umpire, because they knew Pakistan wouldn't object on his decision since Sri lanka voted in favor of Pakistan.

I think it is time to pick top brass from SA, WI or Some other country than Australia and India.

Re: Does Ashoka Desilva belonged to Elite panel?

He was kicked out of the elite panel a couple of years ago due to his incompetency and got back in only after PCB kicked Hair out of the cricket scene.

I would rather have Ashokas incompetence than Hairs racism.

Re: Does Ashoka Desilva belonged to Elite panel?

A golden moment few years ago in a test match between india and wi. Ashoka was looking at the stands when Indian keeper appealed for a stumping :hehe:

Re: Does Ashoka Desilva belonged to Elite panel?

^ did he eat "Twix" right then? :CareBear:

Re: Does Ashoka Desilva belonged to Elite panel?

i was a little surprised with some of his quick decisions… especially the LBW on Chris Gayle in the first innings. Even I, sitting at home, could see that it was too high on the knee-pad to be given out- not even considering the fact that Gayle is really tall.

i agree that some of his decisions went in our favour but i still don’t think we won because of that… i think our winning had a lot to do with the three dropped chances of Mohammad Yousuf. had he been out on any of those opportunities, Pakistan would not have been able to put up a large total.:halo:
