I know this is fairly common practice in India, but what about Pakistan? If so, is it a rural tihng or an urban thing or what?

Nobody I know. Some do an Istekhara before finalizing a rishta.

Also, is it a Hindu only thing in India, or do Muslims in India do the compare horoscope thing for marriages?

I know a girl in our family, back in Pakistan who rejected a rishta from the family saying "hamaray sitaray nahi miltay" then she was married to the son of their family friends who has deprived her of her two kids now.

A lot of people do Istakhara ( and it is recommended to do so ) ...
and regarding these star's / Horoscope things - i have never seen any one rejecting / accepting over these claims....

Thank God I am not friends or relative with someone who base their decisions on stars than the aqal provided by Allah

Thats just a Hindu thing. Well even Hindus aren't really doing it anymore. Well not the more ummm progressive ones.
