This is meant to be so, isn’t it? But recently I have noticed that not spending time with someone/speaking to them often sort of just makes you forget them, no? 
So, does abscence really make the heart grow fonder or just teach you to get on with your life?

If a person cares about you to begin with....absence can make the heart grow fonder. If they don't feel anything for you, then it can be out of sight, out of mind.
Or your absence (or playing-hard-to-get) may make someone become more curious about you since you've taken away the attention that they're so used to receiving......but that "curiosity" may be more about their ego and not develop into deeper feelings/relationship.

Not in my case no, like Wane said. I could quite happily be a singleton, so it's important that my SO and I keep in contact and see each other when possible - it does make you realise what you were missing though.

if u talk to them all the time, u dont really give a 2 ****s about them anymore. Personal experience, but physical presence is something definitely needed in a relationship. Skype doesn't cut it. No sparks created.

I agree! If the person really cares for you, then absence does make the heart grow fonder or else it's out of sight, out of mind!!
