does 786 really mean biesmiella irrahma nierrahiem?

Someone told me, that 786 doesn’t mean anything. We always write it on top of letters instead of biesmiellah. As far as I know, only Pakistani people do it. But this Maroc friend of mine, told me those numbers don’t mean biesmiellah? Can any one help out, please?

From what I know, islam has been given to us in the most perfect way. We dont need to make up puzzles and numbers for any number of surahs/ayaats. Apart from that, to the best of my knowledge, this has no base in the teachings of the Prophet.

So why write 786? The Prophet always started his letters with :bism: written at the top, we can choose to follow that. These number games such as 786 and the “magic number 19” are nothing but idiocies and definitely not needed.

your friend is right in saying that 786 does not represent Bismillah. I had opened a thread a while ago but I am unable to search it coz the search doesn't allow me to search for less than 4 words. Maybe some moderator can help me with that.

I personally don’t like using 786 therefore do not use it in letters or emails.
But for the discussion sake, I hear people saying we use it because of the fear of disrepect, since the letter goes to different places and different people’s hands and sacs etc…so using the code could save us from all this process. Also the reader knows as well that this is a numeric code for :bism:
This is just their reason. Could be right could be wrong.

Assalamuallykum Brother/Sister:

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

Coming to the point you raised in your question, we can say that though the use of the number “786” as a substitute for the Basmallah is widespread in some places it carries no weigh in the Shariah. Nothing can replace the divine words of Allah. We should be encouraged to stick firmly to the dictates of Shariah and to disregard all groundless forms and practices that have no Shari`ah-based backing.

This tradition is not from the time of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, or his Companions. It developed much later, perhaps during the later `Abbasid period.

This innovation of writing "786" at the top of a document or a letter replacing the holy words of Bismillahir Rahmanir Raheem() has, unfortunately, been a common practice since long by the majority of the Ummah, specially by the Urdu speaking Muslims in the Indian subcontinent.

Unfortunately, this tradition is gradually being passed over from one generation to another. But, do we see this number in place of the holy words of Bismillahir Rahmanir Raheem in the Holy Quran? Or, can we write it there as well? Can we remove these holy words from the top of Surah Fatiha and replace it with the number 786? Obviously not.

If we study the Holy Quran, we see it carries the holy words in a letter from Prophet Solomon (peace be upon him) to the Queen of Sheeba - Bilqis -Who was an infidel at that time. Even Prophet Mohammed (PBUH) in his letters to different non-Muslim kings, knights, and heads of states and governments, used the holy words at the top. Therefore, whosoever uses 786 with the intention of obtaining the Divine blessings is an ignorant person and any attempt to justify it is based on ignorance, innovation or blind following of the practices of his ancestors.

More astonishing is the fact that "786" is an aggression of the numbers of Hindu deity hari Krishna. H(A)RI KR(I)SHNA-H5, R200, I-10, K-20, R-200, SH-300,N-50, A-1 = aggregrate of 86. Thus, the aggregrate number of these letters (Hari Krishna) equals "786". Therefore, it is necessary to avoid using this number to avoid the danger of being inadvertently indulging in infidelity or blasphemy.

Allah has perfected for us His Religion, and completed His Grace on us through it. Thus this Religion is invulnerable for additions or subtractions. For Allah says:

"This day have I perfected your religion for you, completed My Grace upon you, and have chosen Islam for you as your religion." (5:3)

We must worship Allah in the lawful way that is ordained by Allah in His Book, and spelt out by the Prophet in his Sunnah. Whoever dares to invent or insert anything that is not in accordance with Allah's Book or the Prophet's Sunnah is doomed to rejection. The Authentic hadiths states:

"Whoever introduces something to this affair of ours will have it rejected". [Note: Agreed upon on the authority of `Aishah]

"Whoever does something which does not belong to our affair will have it rejected." [Note: Reported by Muslim]

and,

"Beware of new things in matters of worship, for every new thing is an innovation and every innovation leads to falsehood." Note: Reported by Abu Dawud, No.4607, Al-Tirmidhi,

May Allah guide us all!
fe aman Allah

We are meant to understand that '786' stands for 'Bismillah Hir Rehmaan-er-aheem'. How did it come about, and who started it? The numerals 786 in no way represent 'Bismillah Hir Rehmaan-er-Raheem' and is not the Sunnat way. If one fears abuse of the letter, etc. 'Bismillah Hir Rehmaan-er-Raheem' should be recited verbally at the beginning of the letter which will suffice for the written script. Refer below.

By Mufti Ebrahim Desai - Jamiat KZN

CAN NUMBER 786 REPLACE THE HOLY NAME OF GOD?
The innovation of writing '786' replacing 'Bismillah Hir Rehmaan-er-Raheem' has been adopted for a long time and the majority of the Ummah is still indulged in it advertently. Apart from the common folk, the scholars also heed no attention towards it and to avoid disrespect to the Holy Words they use it in their letters and documents. They adopt it as 'correct' and 'better' way to invite Allah's blessings and have also started replacing the Holy Words by this number on their houses, offices, buildings, etc.

Unfortunately, this tendency is gradually gaining momentum. But, do we see this number instead of the Holy Words in the Holy Quran? Or, can we write it there as well? Can we remove 'Bismillah Hir Rehmaan-er-Raheem' from the top of Surah al- Faatiha and replace it with the number 786? Obviously not. If we study the Quran, we see it carries the holy words in a letter from Prophet Solomon (pbuh) to the Queen of Sheeba - Bilqis - who was an infidel at that time. Even Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) in his letters to different heads of states and governments, used the holy words at the top.

Therefore, whosoever uses ‘786’ with the intention to obtain Allah's blessings, is a misguided person and any attempt to justify it, is ignorance. More astonishing is that fact that '786' is an aggregation of the numbers of Hindu 'Lord Hari Krishna'. H(a)iri Kr(i)shna h-5, r-200, r-10, k-20, r-200, sh-300, n-50, a-1 = Aggregate of 786.

Thus, the aggregate number of these letters (Hari Krishna) equals 786. This is also the case of 'Bismillah Hir Rehmaan-er-Raheem'. Therefore, it is necessary to avoid using this number to avoid the danger of being indulging in infidelity. Islam's foundation is laid on the belief in Tawheed (oneness of God). If we associate anyone with Allah's exalted names orally or practically, we would be committing infidelity that is an unpardonable sin.

The Quran warns us, one who finds a rival against Allah, Allah will never allow him to enter paradise, and his abode is the hell. The letters by the Prophet (pbuh) to non-Muslim Kings and chiefs bear the holy words 'Bismillah Hir Rehmaan-er-Raheem'. This was also the case of his noble companions. Did the Prophet (pbuh) and his companions respect the Holy Words less than we do? Was the verse, 'Today I completed your religion for you', revealed to the Prophet (pbuh) or to the so called scholars of our age who are all bent to amend the Divine principles.

Now, when it became known that '786' is written in place of Hindu, 'Lord Krishna', and has no significance in the Holy Quran and Sunnah, it is obviously an innovation and goes against the Divine doctrine of 'Obey Allah and His Prophet'. Similarly, some Muslims replace Allah's name by the number '66' and the Prophet's name by '92'. But if one ask, the number '420' is used against somebody's name and he is called '420'. Can he bear such an insult? Calling someone by a nick name is a sin. Allah Ta'ala says, 'Don't call one another by nick names'. If Allah prohibits the use of nicknames for fellow human beings, how can He allow the use of such insulting replacement number for Himself and His Prophet (pbuh). 'Bismillah Hir Rehmaan-er-Raheem' great significance in the Quran and Muslims are ordered to begin any work but in the names Allah, not in the number of '786' or any other substitution.

Everybody, thanks for the information.

yeah right, 786 doesnt mean anything…what our paki and indian ppl have done is that they have added the numbers associated with each harf-e-abjd and summed it to make 786…so i dont see any logic behind it…why do we need to summarize it..

also, some one was giving me the reason, that they write 786 so that if the letter or paper falls, then :bism: ki be-hurmati nahi ho gee…thats totally ridiculous…i would like to ask those ppl if they write 786 instead of :bism:, there intention is the same (AQEEDAT), and it will have same affect is paper containing 786 is dropped…
