There’s a report Canada’s fertility doctors meeting in Toronto this week are considering barring obese women from undergoing fertility treatments.
That’s because some studies suggest they face more complications.
Women are considered obese if they have a Body Mass Index of 30 or more.
Arthur Leader of the Ottawa fertility Centre told the Globe and Mail his clinic already has a policy that denies fertility treatments to women with a BMI of 35.
Critics said it’s pure discrimination.

***Thoughts?
**I find it absurd. What about women who are too skinny (like that Guliana from E!)? Fertility treatment is not covered by the government, so these women are paying out of their own pocket for these treatments. Why should they be denied?
Re: Doctors may deny fertility treatments to obese women: reports
I would say that if they can stop women who drink heavily or smoke from getting fertility treatments then..sure. Being obese isn't healthy either. BUT I believe hta tmost women who are TTC and at the point of being treated for infertility have already made lifestyle changes to become healthy, no?
Re: Doctors may deny fertility treatments to obese women: reports
Please dont kill me, but I think that pregnancy and obesity is very dangerous combination, both for expecting mom and unborn baby. I think just for that matter, study might be suggesting a right conclusion.
Re: Doctors may deny fertility treatments to obese women: reports
Obesity sure does carry complications during pregnancy, but I still feel it is discriminating ..!
Sometimes women are suffering from certain conditions where weight gain happens, weight loss does not happen easily and it is actually hard to be the ideal weight (like in PCOS).I'd rather they screen for other things that no more octomoms happen...!!
Re: Doctors may deny fertility treatments to obese women: reports
^ I'm pretty sure doctors would run down the usual checklist, they wouldn't just say such a big no to a person by simply looking at their weight and not finding out more.
Re: Doctors may deny fertility treatments to obese women: reports
I think if you're going to restrict treatment for obese women then it should be restricted for really under weight women as well. Heck while we're at it lets not give fertility treatments for women with diabeties, or high blood pressure as well since pregnancy with diabeties and high blood pressure is risky as well. How about older women, risks or down syndrome and other abnormalities increases substancially as the woman gets older.
A friend of mine would be considered obese and is currently going through fertility treatments and has made a very sincere effort to be healthier, she already has a child and is unable to get pregnant without fertility treatments. She's an awesome mother and to deny her the ability to have more children is absurd.
I know that you can argue that these women can lose the weight and then get treatment but for many women weight loss is a life long struggle.
Re: Doctors may deny fertility treatments to obese women: reports
so if doctors think that due to weight, there are very rare chances of getting pregnant, is it ok to waste tax payer's money?
OHIP only covers IVF if tubs are blocked, (not for infertility caused by excessive weight)....all other fertility issues are paid for by the patient so they're not wasting tax payers money.
