The actor starred in several Egyptian films before he became an international star with Lean’s 1962 Oscar-winning epic “Lawrence of Arabia.” Sharif received his first and only Academy Award nomination for his role as Sherif Ali. He won three Golden Globes during his career.
Sharif would go on to star in two other big hits of the 1960s, “Doctor Zhivago” and “Funny Girl,” alongside Barbra Streisand.
He has 118 acting credits listed on his IMDb page, his last completed role being the family dramedy “Rock the Casbah” from 2013.
Sharif was also a world-class player of contract bridge, a four-person card game. He wrote a column about the game for the Chicago Tribune as well as books on the subject, “Omar Sharif’s Life in Bridge” and “Play More Bridge With Omar Sharif.”
I don't even know him. 1962? seems like my dads time. But in RIP whoever he is.
I remember him mostly from my father's conversations too. 'Lawrence of Arabia' and 'Doctor Zhivago' both were his favourites. Both are classic blockbusters
Oh man, I used to love his comedy bit about malbaris in Dubai owning chai dhabas on the moon. And the whole thing about being a servant for famous Pakistani actors. Lol @ Anjuman asking tea.
He will be missed. I feel like Pakistan has lost a hero.
