Docs irritated by your pre-knowledge?

Did it ever happen to you and what do you feel about that?

The problem is docs rarely explain the (any) procedure to you which takes patients like myself by an unpleasant surprise. After these surprises I started to search and look for related information on internet, also because I really want to know what’s going on within me. This generates questions which when I ask the docs, get a really rude response. like this doc said ‘to phir internet say he ilaaj karwa lo’ etc..

Don’t know what pschy lies behind that? what’s wrong in trying to know your condition..

Re: Docs irritated by your pre-knowledge?

That must be the doctors in Pakistan????

Re: Docs irritated by your pre-knowledge?

it really depends on doctor to doctor, im becoming a dentist and yes some of my collegues do get a bit frustrated when patients come in and have already diagnosed what is wrong wit them ,from information they read on internet, however i can understand many doctors/dentists do not explain exactly what is going which is wrong since it is the absolute right of the patient to be told everything and 4 eveything to be explained to them in a comprehensive way.

Many patients come in with a huge panic and in tears thinking they have cancer, just 4rm reading up on the intrenet, without consulting a doctor to begin with, and no im not joking , i mean this is UK im talking about, best thing to do is explain to ure doctor to go over everything and raise any worries or reservations you have such as not understanding what is wrong with them e.t.c if they get annoyed at this then they clearly are very unprofessional and u shud try goin to another doctor, since u shud feel comfortable talking with ure doctor, and they should not get irritated if u have looked up info and pre- knoledge since it is only natural 4 u to do so, a huge part of being a doctor. dentist is not jsut have the knowledge of their profession and teh skill but also the ability to manage patients and communication and an understanding with each patient.

Re: Docs irritated by your pre-knowledge?

hahah i do that every time . before i go to d doctor wen dere is sumfin wrong wid me i tell him n he gets real annoyed n tries to contradict . Uk healthcare i sreally crap

Re: Docs irritated by your pre-knowledge?

I do it too. If they are more knowledgeable then they should be able to take it. If they aren't willing to stay on top of the research and information that's out there then they have to deal with the fact that we don't trust their knowledge.

Doctors generally annoy me with their egos. I have little tolerance for it. I know I'll offend someone, but after the experiences we had with several doctors while my brother was sick with an unknown illness, I have no patience for their inadequacy or egos.

Re: Docs irritated by your pre-knowledge?

My doctor has came up with the remedy to keep me quiet, after asking whats wrong with me, he put thermometer in my mouth.

please advice how to tackle this!!!

Re: Docs irritated by your pre-knowledge?

Yes the doc is Paki.. :)

I went to docs in Germany and they explain everything so nicely pre-procedure instead of directly shoving something inside you..!

Well yes Tweety i,m sure lots of ppl come to them and they might get fed up if every1 has a story to tell.. Well they are humans too and may make mistakes/miss out something so they shouldn't be offended if a correction is made..

I got this particular comment when i was supposed to undergo a (kinda)operation, I looked for it on the internet and found out that I should stop I particular medicine I was taking at the time 48 hrs prior to that..(my doc didn't tell me about it) On my next visit I asked her and she was simply offended..but kher this can't stop me :) ... can't really trust docs these days..!!

Re: Docs irritated by your pre-knowledge?

Hanibal chew a thermometer or two.. hope that helps :D

Re: Docs irritated by your pre-knowledge?

I have been asked by many doctors, if i were a doctor due to my pre-knowledge going in to the clinic. These days you have to be on top of things especially when it comes to your health.

Re: Docs irritated by your pre-knowledge?

did tried that, it hurts :D

besides now i buy my own new thermometer every time i go to see doctor, that irritate her as well.

Re: Docs irritated by your pre-knowledge?

It has happened with me as well, I went for the surgical removal of a cyst I had in my mouth, and the surgeon[highly qualified one] stopped n asked me, "Are you a doctor?" :D and no...my experience has been different, I'm in Pakistan but still the experience has been different. The doctors I consult are very willing to explain the entire procedure, treatment and how it would work, plus they've never got irritated by my pre-knowlege :)...and I'm talking about my dentist, orthodontist and dermatologist.

Re: Docs irritated by your pre-knowledge?

theyre always like..."yes we know that"...."oh that has nothing to do with it" "oph thats just ur fult"

Re: Docs irritated by your pre-knowledge?

OMG! I thought i was the only one...i have had this problem so many times...sometimes knowledge can work against you...which is wrong but thats how most doctors think!!!. I think it comes from lack of self confidence they have in themself or why else would they feel so insecure abt it?!!!!?. Just recently i had a terrible experience with a doctore...he gave me some tests n said i can get them done from whereever i want but recommended some lab 2 me and even gave me their contact info...but i went 4 some other lab and when i went 2 c him again he was really unhappy abt the fact that i didnt go 2 his lab (lol) and i cud see on his face...than he goes one how shaukat khanum is not well equiped for these tests n all....i was like wtf? if that was the case he shud have mentioned it first that dont go there....he just said 2 me to go 2 this other lab cuz its less expensive...i was really horrified with his behavior n than he checked the reports n thank god everythin was alrite except one thing which was nt major at all and he said it himself than IF i want i can treat it this way....but he was givining me something which was not a usual medicine yet he was not willing 2 explain 2 me why i shd take it and he actually got annoyed that me n my sista were concerned if i shud n really need 2 take it and whether it wl affect me later on....but he was like i m the doc na i kno blah blah....and guess wat i came back home checked on net and that medicine has such adverse affects....it caused deaths in canada and i read how it was prescribed for really extreme, severe cases of acne and this fool was givin it 2 me...i went on a proper diet n excercise for 2-3 weeks now and my skin is already so clear...even b4 i had lil problem of acne but he was givin me such a stronge medicine.......newayz had such a bad experience with that moron......so gals beware and never never go and c AWAIS FAROUQI for anything cuz that moron is basicaly there 2 make money not to help patients....he said u decide if u want 2 take the medicine and than come back later (pay me again) and i wl tell u how 2 take the medicine...lol he was so cheap!!!!!!!!!

Re: Docs irritated by your pre-knowledge?

That happens a lot of times just becuase these docs get 'commision' from these labs for every patient they send ..same goes for pharmacies and pharmaceutical companies ..a relative who owns a pharmaceuticall company himself said once 'agar aj ka doctor baksha gya tou koi bhi baksha jai ga'

i wouldn't want to be unjust to doctors..as there are good and bad ppl everywhere so are in this profession too....I am sure there are many competitive docs out there

Re: Docs irritated by your pre-knowledge?

lol true...!

Re: Docs irritated by your pre-knowledge?

Thats happened to me aswell.
I went with my mom to see the doctor. She has a bad back and someone at her work told her that she could try getting an injection which stops the pain. So my mom said this to the doctor and he told her to 'ask her friend to give hr the injection'. With everything my mom said, he was replying back with 'all the patients i see have that' 'i have nothing to give you for that' 'i have that problem too' which wasn't really helping my mom. Now she doesn't wan't to see that doctor again.

It just made him seem unprofessional and as if he wasn't taking his patients seriosly.
