Do you write?

So, do we have any budding writers here? Anyone interested in the nuts and bolts of writing?

Re: Do you write?

ya i m interested to know .... wil u tell us the nuts n bolts of writing ... somthg regardin fiction , adventure or horror ... books ...

Re: Do you write?

It was a question, not an offer per se.
What exactly are you interested in knowing?

Re: Do you write?

anything u wana telll ... :)

Re: Do you write?

I write screenplays.

Re: Do you write?

I possess the knack of composing profound yet spine-chilling threatening letters. 'Tis a shame the recipients have not met the great authoress whose words have inspired and touched so deeply (especially their bank accounts). While this comprises about a third of my income, it's not for everyone. Only those who are truly talented and greedy....erm....I mean unwaveringly ambitious.

More seriously, it is my dream to publish a children's book. I've done the writing bit...and have even researched the publishing process as well.

Re: Do you write?

yes ofcourse!! can u start some threads about the mechanics and styles of writing..

Re: Do you write?

I used to write stage plays and acts at college level (in Pakistan)

Re: Do you write?

KamAirTravel, I was aiming for a discussion rather than a lecture. So, do you write?

Aashiq, who are your influences?

redvelvet, ha, so you're the evil letter lady!
I'm not surprised you're a writer, your posts positively scream 'author!'
Would you like to talk more about your writing, or should I stop being nosy?

philosophy, are you thinking generic advice threads or some sort of writing exercises?

TLK, what kind of stuff?

Re: Do you write?

topo, lets start with generic introductory threads and then we can turn them into some sort of activities!

Re: Do you write?

I agree. Let's have some sort of writers activity.

I've worked as professional writer for LinuxGate, Karachi. I wrote articles on various subjects. The reason I left them was their work was too formal and corporate for me. I write as Freelancer for a couple of websites like Freelancer.com and Elone.com

I write screenplays for short-films. But they're all satirical and at some point, blasphemous to the people. I write psychological and psychotherapy. Mostly influenced by writers as Alan Watts.

I've also a blog. If anyone is intrigued, let me know. :D

Re: Do you write?

^post some stuff here too : D

Re: Do you write?

Safwan, consider us intrigued. Now share the blog already!

Philosophy, I'll start a generic advice thread and we'll go from there. If you have other things in mind then please go ahead and start threads, you know I'll play along.

Re: Do you write?

Well I used to maintain my blog way back. I don’t use this blog anymore. I’m sort of avoiding technology, at best. I write classically, a piece of paper, a gel pen, a coffee, couple of cigarettes. All I’d ever need to write.

I wrote this long time ago. Society! Society.. the foolish ol’ society | Safwan's Den of Universal Truth

Let me know what you guys think? Corrections or advices?

Re: Do you write?

Safwan,

In terms of advice, since you ask, I'd say it's always a good idea to break stuff up into smaller paragraphs.
It contained some thoughts that I would have liked to see you explore further; you're at an interesting junction with regards to faith and the questioning of it and I'd like to see more of the thoughts/conversations you have had with yourself about it all.
Technical aspect, there are a few odd word choices here and there, where it read a little bit like a translation. You could probably counter that by reading your words out loud and seeing if they sound right. Other than that you seem to know what you're doing. Interesting stuff.

I apologize if I have sounded harsh. That was not my intention, I just believe in giving constructive feedback rather than just being nice nice, because that is the quickest route to improvement. I would want the same honesty in return.

Oh and I totally agree with the old pen and paper route.

edit; Saf, are you familiar with Thomas Pynchon?

Re: Do you write?

Oh no no. No piece of advice is harsh. Actually, i appreciate you for being completely honest. I agree that there are some odd word choices here and there, but I've not been able to be online much to keep it up-to-date. It's been ages since I last uploaded any of my work on internet. And no, i'm not familiar with Thomas Pynchon. But I just googled him. He seems to be a famous novelist. But i'm much more into Psychological and Psychotherapy rather then Fictional stuff. In my own screenplays, which I wrote, I wrote about life and things that are there and needs to be spoken out loud.

Have you got a chance to read any of Alan Watts work? You can also find his audio recording on Youtube.

Re: Do you write?

If you ever decide to give fiction a go, Pynchon is a must. He is much more than a novelist, reading his work requires keeping a dictionary and encyclopaedia close to hand; all the subjects you seem to be interested in show up in his work. Anyway, I brought him up because your blog post reminded me of a line from one of his books: "If they can get you asking the wrong questions, they don't have to worry about answers."

I'm aware of Watts but not overly familiar with his work. I'll check out the stuff on youtube and get back to you.

Re: Do you write?

Which sorts?

Re: Do you write?

Writing comedies and thriller/suspense are my main genres.

Re: Do you write?

After years of writing short stories, I’m trying to write my first novel now. Yet since I began, so far I’ve only written very few chapters, because I keep getting ideas for another short story which I want to try out immediately. So I’ve completed more short stories, but still very slow progress with my novel. Oh well, as long as I enjoy writing. It’d be nice to have a book published one day, but if not it wouldn’t influence my joy in writing. It would influence my ambitions though, if that makes any sense.

Anyway, nice to see more writers here of different genres. A few months ago I found a yahoogroup called Islamic Writers. The emphasis of that group is on writing and publishing. If anyone is interested, here are some links:
