well, qismat is one thing while clean slate is another. a believer go through with different tests in life as it also mentioned in Quran that after accepting Islam, Allah will surely test you.

If you are steady (sabit qadam) during your bad time, it will increase you level of deeds. (innalllah ma es sabreen)

I'd say most of us are born "neutral" - where we go depends on how we're brought up and the values we're taught.

Though as someone says above there are sociopaths.

It depends on perspective. The wise Hattori-san pointed out few months ago Ravana was a devout brahmin. Which led me to realize he may not have been as evil as portrayed. Ditto Duryodhana. When the universally adored Pandavas mocked Radheya (son of charioteer Radha - aka Karna) Duryodhane came to Karna 's side and proclaimed him his brother.

Takeaway - some perceived bad people may have lots of good in them and viceversa.

Friends, family, environment and experiences are what shape the person.

It's the classic nature vs nurture debate. If anyone is an expert please chime in as it's a very interesting debate.

Even if someone is born with a certain gene found in sociopaths, you would be able to prevent them from turning into a criminal, or a unscrupulous person, under the the right kind of environment. There's studies that shows this.

Maybe good or bad aren't the right words.

Every infant is born in a state of fitrah... so I do believe that young children, even born under the most traumatic environments with the wrong genes, i.e. "psycho" genes.... are "better" than most of the adults out there.
