A 19 year old Tunisian feminist activist is under threat after she posed topless pictures of her for promoting women’s rights. Now she is being threatened. There are calls from all over the world in her support. I wanted to know what feminists and other folk at this forum think about this.

*A Tunisian Salafi preacher has called for a 19-year old girl who posted her topless pictures on Facebook to be “quarantined” and stoned to death before she starts “an epidemic.”*Tunisian newspaper AssabahNews quoted Salafi preacher Alami Adel, who heads the Commission for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice, saying: “According to God’s law, she deserves 80 to 100 lashes, but what she committed is worth much more than that. She deserves to be stoned to death and she must be quarantined because what she did is an epidemic.” “She is like someone suffering from a serious and contagious illness and she must be secluded and treated,” he added. The young Amina, who is part of a feminist movement and group called FEMEN can be seen smoking a cigarette topless with Arabic words written across her chest in black that reads in English “My body belongs to me.” FEMEN is a Ukrainian based feminist group that gathers women together in Europe in topless protests in support of women’s rights. Amina has been delivered by her parents to a psychiatric hospital in Tunis, according to reports received by FEMEN leader Inna Shevchenko in Paris and reported by the U.S. based magazine the Atlantic. Tunisian media said that if Amina committed the offence in Tunisia, she could be punished by up to two years in prison and be given a fine between $60 and $600. A petition and an international day of action on April 4 to highlight the threats against Amina have been organized by activists. More than 10,000 people have signed the petition that called for those who threatened Amina’s life to be prosecuted. On Thursday reports FEMEN’s Facebook account was hacked emerged. The page had reportedly been infiltrated with videos and pictures on the site being replaced by verses from the Koran. “Thanks to God we have hacked this immoral page and the best is yet to come,” read one message signed by “al-Angour,” an apparent hacker. FEMEN has released a statement condemning “barbarian threats of the Islamists about the necessity of reprisals against the Tunisian activist Amina.” “We are afraid for her life and we call on women to fight for their freedom against religious atrocities” it added. Last month, FEMEN brought together Iranian women in Sweden, who took to the streets of Stockholm demonstrating against the Hijab (Islamic headscarf)
Agreed. Both the woman and the preacher are idiots. She was probably inspired by modern feminism in the west, when she should be emulating first wave feminists.
What is more worrying for me is even on this forum, people are more concerned about a nude woman than a person inciting violence and issuing death fatwas.
^ This. People do dumb things. A 19-year-old posted topless photos. Stupid thing to do but at the end, she’s not hurting anyone. But to suggest that we should stone her to death for this is even more ridiculous. It’s like we’re not capable of dealing with even stupid acts without inciting violence like animals. The answer to everything seems to be a death fatwa.

hey mr.amb........death fatwa is so common, its not even needed to discuss how bad they are. you even have death fatwa for polio vaccine..there is a death fatwa floating around for every tiny winy thing. the topic is towards the nude woman because thats not so common, you don't hear about it every day.
point being, what do these kind of stunts help achieve. Giving fodder to the molvies or doing something actually to support the basic rights of women?? and whether you support it or not.....

First of all, I am not Mr. amb.
Secondly, for me death fatwas, regardless of how common they might be, are more worrying than topless women. And the fact that people are OK with death fatwas (because of which hundreds have been killed in Pakistan alone) because they are 'common' is even more worrying.
If I am shown a news item with a girl getting topless and a cleric inciting death and violence, for me the later will always be more worrying and more important an issue to address.
she should respect her own body before she demands others to respect her body...i'm not saying wear an abaya...but dont flaunt it. you want to be recognized as equal/same as a man...start with your brain...not your breasts.
someone should issue a death fatwa against the maulwis handing out death sentences.
most ppl on either extreme are looking for attention in their own way...they really dont care to achieve anything worthwhile/beneficial for the human race as a whole.
What’s comical is that the preacher isn’t even satisfied with the sentence permitted by God.
He wants a harsher sentence because he thinks he’s in a better position to judge.
What’s the punishment to be doled out for shirk, if there is one? Or is that something that Allah has reserved to be implemented by Him alone?
As for the girl…her actions are naive and inconsequential…
