Do you respect your values?

What i want to know is where do we stand as a muslim, what are our values? When it comes to something that is forbidden in islam, for instance, alcohol, do we only consider it to be forbidden only to drink? What about promoting it? Is it haram to promote to all age groups?

What about when you invite guests over your house, you don’t drink but would you mind serving drinks to your guest because they are not muslim and they dont mind drinking?

So where as a Muslim you draw a line when it comes to something that is forbidden in Islam?

Re: Do you respect your values?

why should I draw these lines - arent they already drawn by our lord ?

Re: Do you respect your values?

atleast its quite simple about drinking/offering/selling/promoting alcohol........its NOT ALLOWED period..

Re: Do you respect your values?

What the people above me said.

And when i have non muslim guests i just serve them Fanta or Coca Cola etc. They can have their alcoholioc drink somewhere else.

Re: Do you respect your values?

**one must NOT be a fanatic. towing a median path [miyaanah ravii] is the advisable thing to do for a common man. taqwa ba-tadreej aataa hai. i'm as liberal as Islam will allow and when i reach the grey area i stay well before that.

'allaamah Iqbal said it all very beautifully:

qaum mazhab se hai, mazhab jo nahiiN tum bhii nahiiN
jazb-e-baaham jo nahiiN, maHfil-e-anjum bhii nahiiN**

Re: Do you respect your values?

Why are your values limited to drinking only?

Re: Do you respect your values?

When comes to think of it, i respect our values. Values which are adherent to bring respect, love and most importantly compassion. The "values" have two parts. One is cultural values, and another one our religious values. What i don't agree with this is our cultural values which are imported backward mentality from our culture. ALL the social problems starts with the backward mindset which are parents or grandparents have brought it upon us. What our job is to follow values based upon our religion. So lets start with compassion and mercy.

Re: Do you respect your values?

since drinking was given as an example ..i wouldn't ever serve/drink/offer alcohol to anyone at my place or when taking them somewhere else - since it's clearly forbidden

Re: Do you respect your values?

This.

Alcohol is a clear cut example in that, you don't drink it. buss.
I won't drink it and I won't serve it in my home and I'd avoid restaurants that sell it if I can. but if a friend decides to drink then who am I to stop them?

On the other hand, for example, there are many small shops/convenience stores/gas stations tht are owned by Muslims that sell alcohol and ham/bacon/pork products. their intent is not to promote these things but because they know if they don't stock these items, their store will lose business and their livelihood will suffer.

One can argue that if alcohol is forbidden, then so is promoting and sellingm it...and a person should find another line of work or just not live in a non-Muslim country. That's where I think the discussion of values starts.
