Suppose you are reading a book.. or some ones work.. or listening to a compelling argument. Do you fact check it often ?
I was reading a chapter from a book. About “true dreams”
Based on many researches, author made a very compelling case that, we have tons and tons of dreams. Once some thing happen in real life, some time brain use that as index search and pull out a dream relating to it… close to it.
Then I thought my dreams over and over… and I believe some of the stuff he said was correct… some of the dreams I saw … did happened.
Its like opinion shaping books is kind of democracy…minority like my self in this case… is over looked… and every one start singing with the author..
And people to whom some things did happen become outcasts…
I always fact check. I have never believed in heresay and never will. I don’t care how much or who I hear it from. What is the point of learning if we don’t? Always consider opposing view, cross check/reference, then come to a conclusion.
monk, i agree with you. there are a lot of fads in the media - especially the pulp media made of mediocre journalists who barely understand enough science to sensationalize it but in the process losing perspective. these days it is about nutrition and superfoods and medical “breakthroughs”. bugs me to no end to see this crap everywhere. people love to delude themselves with this kind of pop-journalism.
the only way out is to educate yourself to know what is substandard gibberish and what is substance. reputation of publications used to matter, but now everyone is a blogger cum journalist. as snobbish as it sounds, an fresh grad english major as a science correspondent - set that magazine on fire.
ps: the title, brah.. its freud pai’s dream analysis written all over it. let go.. now.
Heavy stuff. Interesting abt brain pulling out closest dream to the occurrence. Last para - solidly agree. There is herd mentality in society. We tend to believe what majority believes in. We have stopped thinking for ourselves. That is why climate change denial still has credibility in some circles. And Ditto creationism.
Do I fact check? As much as possible. Many times things that r propagated in the media don’t pass the sniff test. For example it was obvious to liberals the Iraq war was drummed up. While the media pretends it was just abt poor intelligence.
The survival - no thriving of cable networks that blow hot air is due to the fact most people don’t fact check. The world would be a better place if we all did. With an open mind.
Dude, guyz should never let their “thing” go.. thats Guy Code.
Wait, wut things are we talking about it again?
Ok lets be serious, I think that all depends upon an individual. I myself do it if I’m not in the middle of two dozen things which I usually am being a real multitasker. But once its passed, I move on quickly and let it go. Cuz ofcourse by then there are more things knocking on yr head
I am one of those people who believe nutrition and superfoods are the key to long healthy life. Why does this bother you? The wide spread awareness is good. Healthier options have become less and less available and more costly. Why is Organic food twice as expensive? Most of the deaths in my family have been due to cancer. The more research I have done on Cancer the more I realize that certain herbs have cured cancer and no one in the medical community ever talks about that. What’s that all about? Why aren’t we funding that research? Why do we insist on killing the patient’s immune system through chemotherapy and radiation treatments? People are desperate to find cures and not get wasted away…
What queer said abt science, publications and journalism hit home. Humare zamane mein people would read the whole article in a newspaper. Not just the title. They would read the whole journal article. Not just the abstract. There were less distractions. If you attended a group meeting, you were there 100 pct. Today the smartphone warriors have one eye and ear on the meeting discussion. And keep looking at the smartphone. And hit the keypad furiously - am in meeting. Will get back.
Conferences have become a joke. Everyone is more interested in staying “connected”. Attending to emails non stop. Multi tasking is what they call it.
The meeting organizers do their part by sending u last minute docs by email. The first 30 min is lost people figuring out password etc etc.
