Re: Do you get offended if people ask you where you’re from?
only when I am acting all engreez.. and egreez ask me “so where are you from…”
Re: Do you get offended if people ask you where you’re from?
Hehe.. this I can totally relate with. Or rather, being there, done that ![]()
Re: Do you get offended if people ask you where you’re from?
Depends on how it is asked. There are people who truly want to know about culture or whatever and there is those that are asking on how to better “other” you. I don’t know why they don’t just ask “what is your cultural/ethnic background?” instead of perpetuating the notion that anybody who is not white is some perpetual foreigner.
Re: Do you get offended if people ask you where you’re from?
I used to get offended but then I realized that I don’t look like the average American even if I was born here and don’t have an accent, so I’ve come to embrace my whole heritage and tell people that I’m from Pakistan lol.
Re: Do you get offended if people ask you where you’re from?
Why tf would anyone get offended om that?
Re: Do you get offended if people ask you where you’re from?
Never ![]()
Re: Do you get offended if people ask you where you’re from?
I like to say “Guess where I am from” when asked that. I am so mixed that nobody ever gets it right.
Re: Do you get offended if people ask you where you’re from?
^I do the same thing. I ask them to guess and I’ve received mixed answers. I’ve gotten “Arab” a few times, which I think is funny because I grew up in Middle East so maybe it just grew on me, lol. There used to be an Indian woman that worked in the front office. The funny thing is that my 3rd graders, who have absolutely no concept of geography, guessed that I was from India…which is close to Pakistan…and therefore a reasonable guess. So my 3rd graders had a better clue about my ethnicity than the front office secretary…who thought I was Arab…and was shocked to hear my speak in Urdu ![]()
But, no, I don’t get offended. We’re living in times where Muslim countries have a negative image in the media. Sometimes I think it’s good for my coworkers, for example, to know that I’m from Pakistan and that I grew up in the Middle East…so that they have positive images of Muslims in their mind…that negate those in the media. With that said, we have more of a reason to display our best character in our interactions with non-Muslims.
Re: Do you get offended if people ask you where you’re from?
Nah I actually prefer that they ask me rather than random guessing because unless they are Pakistani themselves, 99.9% chance, they will get it wrong.
Re: Do you get offended if people ask you where you’re from?
Used it to… the face in conjunction with the accent gets everyone confused.
Re: Do you get offended if people ask you where you’re from?
Haha I do the same. Usually they think I’m Moroccan/afghan.. -__-
Re: Do you get offended if people ask you where you’re from?
I don’t get offended by the question. I usually tell people I’m from New York. And they have a confused look on their face lol. “Where are you REALLY from?” is what they’re thinking so I ask them to take a guess. They usually guess Arab/Mediterranean. So when I tell them I’m Pakistani, they’ll make a comment on how dangerous the current state of things are. I’ll just listen and nod, I honestly have no clue…
