We all know the child’s brought is vital in developing his character, but I met few people, strongly believing in genetical effect of parents on children.
I have heard stories about adopted orphans.e.g, after a theft, the family might suspect the adopted child who was son of a theif.
Does the blood and genes matters??? Is the dead prostitute to be blamed, if her child grows up to become a woman of bad character ?
The age-old question of heredity versus environment....
The specifics dont really apply I think (like parent is a theif so child may be a theif) but if a parent is a criminal, there ARE certain genetic traits that may be passed on which can cause criminal tendencies in the offspring. For instance, things like ADHD (attention deficit disorders), mood disorders, bipolar disorder all have the potential of causing criminal tendencies. A great home and school environment can indeed help overcome those tendencies but they're there nonetheless. Thats the reason why researchers are so interested in serial killers, they beleive that theres something wrong in the wiring of the brain to cause such extreme behavior.
:k: good post, i remembered a lady telling her story, she got pregnant after getting raped, she had the child: a son, and when he became adult he became a raper too:(

dunno to wat extent its true but seeing is believing. i have a cuzin who have neva seen his father since da day he was born and now as he's into his teenage years, his likes/dislikes, behaviour etc exactly like his dad. its quite shocking to see him talking, eating, standing etc juz da way his dad used to. even character wise, and certain habits such as day-dreaming, lying etc i wonder if those traits are genetic too
Well it is a question of nature vs Nurture, however, Islam gives a good indication also. Allah says in the Qur'an ''..had I had a son, I would be the first to prostrate before him'' indicating that the son is the same as the father in essence/genetics.
A hadith aso indicates that the good deeds of the ancestor are continually rewarded the descendants (the Hadith of Hadrat Khidr and Hadrat Musa as). But The Prophet pbuh also clearly stated that the the child is born sinless, free of all it's parents sins.
Blood does give certain traits, such as e.g. bravery (a controlled adrenal rush, better clarity of mind to win a fight, intellectual ability) are all certainly genetics and later can be enhanced if susceptible to education. Now use those for evil, you will be damn evil. Use these for good, and you will be quite noble.
Ultimately, we have a habit of looking for reasons why we are the way we are. If someone is bad, we blame their parents, their caste, their race, their religion. If they are good, we do the same.
are parents of all murderers also murderers? are grandparents of a gang bangr also gang bangers.
Now while genses play a role in giving a person more intellectual ability or atheletic ability, it also must be nurtured.
Now when you see traits, way of thinking and all similarity, how much is really just genetics, and how much is it a combo of genetics and the home atmosphere, upbringing philosophy, morals and norms observed by the family etc etc.
In the end, if we were no more than our geentic code then we would not be responsible for crimes right?
the example of a rapists chid being rapist fals flat on its face once u realize that many children molested also end up as child molesters ..even if they were not molested by their parents. So where does genetics play a role and where does the psychological trauma, impact and upbringing?
Most people believe this to be BS. However, I think both genetics and home environment play a significant role in how a person turns out to be. Society also plays a significant role. I am so much like my parents; and proud of it too.
