share as to why, in a gathering of people who do or ought to ideally know what saying Asalam a laikum means, do they avoid saying it and say hi instead?

I say it to all my non muslim friends. Even jewish ones. But I say it more loudly to my hindu buddies and buddiettes..as i feel they need it the most.
