Well yes and no. Yes, because it doesn’t serve any “national” purpose other than may be someone getting bit of more info/educated on some issues. No, because it does serve human behavioral/psychological purpose, if we don’t vent out our frustration/anger at a particular issue it might result in bad impact on our mental health (in turn resulting in bad physical health). However, in such drawing room debates no one should get physical :D.

I dont think that the way our discussions are handled help educate people much, its too polarized to have a sensible discussion most of the time. and venting is fine, but venting ad nauseum.?? there are certain people i avoid at events because I know exactly what they would say and then i would be hijacked from enjoying the evening. I dont even smoke anymore that I can excuse myself for a smoking break and run out.

I don’t think that is good enough generalization. People in US also talk about politics, issues at hand, not so sure about international issues :D. BTW, Pakistani drawing room talks also include sports and religious talks

I think its the percentage of time allocated to politics that is . People would bring something up, say a few things and be over it, move on to a diff topic. In desi circles it can get quite in depth. heh our sports talk also gets into politics pretty quickly, and religion, well u know how that goes in many cases.
