Re: do we really have to diss our culture all the time?
No, your post was fine. It was a genuine question and deserved serious replies. The discussion was, however, turned to adoption where it is easier to bash desi culture.
I am not saying our culture and values are amazing and great. They really do have a lot of weak points. Just saying that criticizing it for the sake of it is not cool :P
You called it a "gem"...so hence my reply.
I dont think we necessarily bash our culture...but the people of a certain culture are much more aware of its faults than an outsider would be. So, we self-reflect. If that self-reflection leads to someone correcting their behavior...then I am all for it.
Its important to remember that it is OUR culture...not anyone else's. We are critiquing ourselves.
Re: do we really have to diss our culture all the time?
so what if i say that bits and pieces of our culture have been grabbed from different other cultures and eventually evolved into something very confusing !
yes we have a rich culture and traditions - but if we speak Islamically alot of things culturally aren't Islamic e.g jahaiz, girls family hosting most of the functions, the ever brewing tensions b/w ILs and bahus ..they are all actually evolved from watching crap soap serials !
and if we self-reflect and try to recognise the weaknesses or the loop holes in our culture ...it has nothing to do with being 'madurn' or trying to be cool :)
but yes if we start criticising our cultural values of respecting our families, elders, living together, sharing the happiness and sorrows with each other - as mere interference then yes we that's when we are dissing it just for the sake of it .
Re: do we really have to diss our culture all the time?
when you see your own culture as an anomaly while living in countries with predominantly other cultures............you are bound to have this sort of feelings towards your own culture..

When you live in a single culture and are not exposed to anything else...this sort of mentality is also bound to happen. You fail to recognize any real faults and believe whatever it is you're exposed to has got to be it.
Re: do we really have to diss our culture all the time?
Good thread!
I love my culture from the traditionalism, to the hospitality, to the fact that Islam is a big part of it. It's a culture, so it has its imperfections, but its also evolving. I love you Pakistanis :)
Re: do we really have to diss our culture all the time?
..... **criticise **something to make people aware of the problems and deficiencies. And there are alot of those in our culture. I would suggest its a positive thing to encourage improvement.
Re: do we really have to diss our culture all the time?
Ah, it does not surprise me to see desi men not getting why we need to criticize our own culture. Those that are not blind to the negatives of our society/culture, kudos to you!

I will critisize it at every seized opportunity. I will drill in into your heads, only then I can expect a change! Yeah, it's like really cool to hear stories of abused/battered women and stuff.......
Re: do we really have to diss our culture all the time?
I totally despise negative notions and stigmas of our desi culture. Why can't we pick good and positives from western and eastern society. To add more, our religion too despises our south asian culture.
Re: do we really have to diss our culture all the time?
It's a pretty bunk culture (basically a modified version of Hindu culture) and I for one thank God that my father chose to GTFO and move to the west.
That said it has it's good points as does western culture.
All in all, a hybrid culture, such as us children of immigrants (and they themselves in most cases) have grown to adopt is a step in the right direction.
I like to think of it as this, a gora burger tastes like **** but once you add some dhania, red, and green peppers to the mix it makes it delicious
