Do we have a doctor here?

My mother was tested yesterday and she had a high value of

Urea Nitrogen, the normal range is till 21 and she had 22.8.
Glycated Hymoglobin, i think it was 8+

She is diabetic & has blood pressure. Can any doctor here explain to me in lay person’s words what these both effect? I do know that Urea Nitrogen effects kidneys and HBa1c is for glucose levels but can these high values be controlled and what exactly should she be careful of?

Re: Do we have a doctor here?

sheyn is a dr

Re: Do we have a doctor here?

I'm not a doctor but have some knowledge about this and I will keep it very simple.
Glycosylated Hemoglobin is an average of what blood glucose levels were the past 3 months. Recommendations are that it should be below 7%. Since your moms value was above 8 it means her blood glucose is not controlled well and it is high. When there is too much glucose (sugar) in the blood streams it causes many problems. One of those is that it affects kidney function.

Now BUN (blood urea nitrogen) is a measure of how much nitrogen is in the blood in the form of urea. The normal range is 10-20 i believe. Your moms was 22.8 which means her kidneys are not filtering her blood adequately and too much nitrogen is going back into her blood.

The conclusion is that your moms blood glucose is not under control and its leading to impaired kidney function. BUN is not so high that you should be too worried. What she should do is try her best to keep her blood glucose under control. Take her medication exactly as prescribed and if she is told when to eat food or snacks she should follow that exactly as well. Any weight loss is helpful for a diabetes patient, so encourage her to be active.

Best of luck!

Re: Do we have a doctor here?

**Daffy cdg pretty much explained it ...

Your Mom is diabetic as well as hypertensive.......both these affect various vital organs of the body including kidneys especially when they are not controlled properly....... I wouldn't worry too much about both the levels of your mom's blood tests but they do indicate that she needs a more tighter control of her diabetes especially.....I don't know what her BP readings are but I would expect that they fluctuate and are not very well controlled either........

She needs to be on a proper diabetic diet with frequent meals 5-6 per day divide them into bf , lunch and dinner and with snacks in between so that her blood sugar levels don't fluctuate immensely.......most diabetics either do two things , don't bother with the diet or are too scared to eat and over diet.....both are wrong since we don't want them having hypoglycaemic attacks either especially if they are on insulin.......it would be advisable if you have a glucometer at home to keep a diary of her blood sugars , fasting and 2 hours post meals....and if on insulin then pre and post meals hypocounts.....it will help the doctor to guide her treatment and regulate the doses.

Also you have to remember both diabetes and hypertension affect the same vital organs and so need proper monitoring and regular physician visits............a lot of the time patients will see a dr and get a prescription and continue on it on and off without going back to check if it needs readjustment and then only come back when things are worse.......

Hope that helps.**

Re: Do we have a doctor here?

^Does anyone of those flirt? ;)

Just BUN or Urea nitrogen is not enough info. Creatnine is better indicator of kidney function.

Re: Do we have a doctor here?

Yes, It's true and I was going to ask you what her creatnine was since the ratio of BUN and creatinine is a better indicator.

Re: Do we have a doctor here?

Her cretatine is in the safe zone but bordering the upper limit almost

Re: Do we have a doctor here?
