BAGHDAD - The young Iraqi men thought they had good reason to enter Turkey: to escape their violent homeland and sneak to Sweden.

But their dreams came to an end at the Istanbul airport when two dozen of them had “Cancelled” stamped across their Turkish entry stamps by immigration officials.

With $700 each wasted on tickets, the despondent crew - some 25 men who had happened to travel on the same plane - flew back to Baghdad to greet families who had let them go with high hopes that they would settle abroad and then send for relatives.

“My parents don’t believe *,” says a glazier called Hassan, whose upper-lip peach fuzz belies his 22 years. “They are angry. Not because of the lost money, but because I didn’t make it. Now I prefer to die in Baghdad.”

Hassan’s family had long planned to leave. Explosives placed in the car of a cousin just three days earlier - meant as a sectarian warning to move - clinched the argument.

“Most parents believe it is better if their children are safe and far away, instead of close [in Iraq], where they may get blown up,” says Rasoul, a translator who has worked with American police units in Iraq.
He had saved for months, aware that friends, armed with $7,000, had reached Greece from Turkey, acquired forged passports, and gotten to Sweden, where everything worked out.

For Rasoul, the refusal was a sign of disrespect and final proof that Iraq’s violence has prompted a fall from grace for his countrymen. “[The Turks] saw us and feared us. They didn’t agree to let the younger ones in, though they had money,” says Mohammed Qassim Ali, owner of an electronics shop in downtown Baghdad that has been hit with explosives so often that he has had to replace glass twice a month for the past year.

At 44, Mr. Ali was allowed to enter Turkey, but his son-in-law Mustapha was refused. Ali had been in contact with a Turkish doctor to operate on Mustapha’s hand, injured in a car crash. But that plan collapsed, so the next morning - after spending a night stuck at the Baghdad airport because of Baghdad’s curfew - they were going to try their luck with Syria](http://search.news.yahoo.com/search/news/?p=Syria).

“The Turks are trying to show to Europe that they can deal with immigration, and protect Europe’s border,” says Ali. Even Jordan and Syria, which have been accepting 3,000 Iraqis a day between them, “are looking at us with a narrower mind,” says Ali.

“Morale is low,” he adds, surrounded by defeated fellow travelers. “I think each day will be worse than the day before.”*

Re: Do this with Afghans..

i guess its better suited here

Re: Do this with Afghans..

we are like "banders"(monky)

zia said afghans are brother take them in we did

musharaf said they are enemies and we started dancing according to musharaf's wish.

Re: Do this with Afghans..

If we expel the Afghans that will heavily sour relations between Pakistan and Afghanistan.

I think this has to be done in a humane manner

Re: Do this with Afghans..

its odd merc considering how anti-immigration to europe you are! its always been odd to me, how the same ppl who are severely opposed to immigration to Europe are always for Immigration to Pakistan! Pakistan and Iran have the highest number of immigrants within thier borders so if anyone should be talking about closing the borders it chould these countries, not european ones!

Re: Do this with Afghans..

*^^who cares........ either way we are considered bad....so might as well show it *
*do u really think afghans give a damn about pakistanis.....they are using our pakistani land for illegal activities ....jaisey un ke baap ki jaidaad hai. *

Re: Do this with Afghans..

^^ yeah man ... afghanis just HATE pakistanis. they are on india's side.

Re: Do this with Afghans..

No not really. Afghans are mostly Pashtuns who are also live in Pakistan.

To me its like Germany accepting Volga Germans from Russia or Japan accepting Japanese-Brazilians, etc...

I am against immigration to Europe because Europe is not an immigrant continent and the people who are migrating there are not adjusting well and are turning to extremism which I dont like.

Re: Do this with Afghans..

thats right. you ahev to diffrentiate bewteen the pashtun afghans, who have adjusted to life in pakistan well(ex: starting succesfull businesses, getting jobs, arent unemployed) from the farsiwaans afghans(tajik, uzbek mostly),alot of whom are still in refugee camps. these farsiwaans are the real threat, not the pashtuns

Re: Do this with Afghans..

As if Afghanis who settled in Pakistan really have 'integrated', they have caused more trouble for Pakistan then immigrants in Europe could do, more drugs, more weapons/ammunition etc. I think the only reason you oppose immigration to Europe is that it destroys your dream of 'blonde' Europe.

Re: Do this with Afghans..

I don't think most Afghans in Pakistan are Pashtun..

I've only ever come across the Tajiki and Hazara sh*ts when in Pakistan and I hate them with a passion... Some Kabulis claim to be Pashtun but they don't even speak a word of Pashto...

Well I'd be for Pashtuns staying in Pakistan, Pashtuns are hot, dashingly handsome, cultured and proud whichever side of the border they're from but Parsibans are fugly (so bland, rough looking) and so are Hazaras, they smell of their sheeps and they hate Pakistan.

Had there been a way of telling their ethnicities we could have kept the Pashtuns and kicked the Parsibans out but Parsibans will only try to pass themselves off as Pashtun even though they're too ugly with their big faces, little eyes, strawberry noses and bad BO, they're a bad influence on the local economy of my region so they need to go...

I know you probably want them to become Pakistani but lets face it they'll never become Pakistani even after generations.... Look at Adnan Sami, I grew up watching him on telly and then almost had an heartattack when I saw him on Zee and when the presenter asked him about his Pakistani background he refused to acknowledge it and turned his face in digust saying "he is now a proud Indian and his great grandfather was an Afghan"...

Parsiban's are like kuttey, jiss dar se tukrrey miltey hain ussi ke ho ke reh jaatey hain.. Kisi ka ehsaan yaad naheen rakhetyy..

Yahoodiyon waali fitrat hai in logon ki, intehai namak haraam aur ehsaan faramosh.

Re: Do this with Afghans..

Yes that is one of the reasons. I want Europe to remain white

No not really. Afghans are mostly Pashtuns who are also live in Pakistan.

sorry but i dont understand

afghans are pashtuns…
but pashtuns arent they pathan?
so that means afghans can also be pathan:hmmm:
I didnt know that

Re: Do this with Afghans..

^^ Pashtun is the English way of saying Pathan

Re: Do this with Afghans..

That Adnan Sami is the worst… Whats his beef with Pakistan anyways?

Re: Do this with Afghans..

PP! You want pushto speaking afghans to stay in Pakistan only becasue they are handsome? Well other communities are also doing good herel! We have hazara ismailies in Karachi! They are also hard working and getting education here! Whereas the pushto speaking afghans in Karachi are far away from education!

Re: Do this with Afghans..

Even farsiwans of quetta - Pakistanis since 1947 are far ahaed in education - they are doctors, chartered accountants and engineers! They are far ahead of balouch and pusthuns in Quetta.
