i read the aayaats where Allah talks about His mercy and forgiveness. that calms me down.

Some parts of the Quran scare me too. Others make me realise how Allah is forgiving and understanding in certain cases. So there is always a healthy balance between fear of punishment en hope of understanding and forgiveness of certain understandable mistakes every human makes.
